I saw many soldiers in the war zone do the same thing. Sometimes it's because you're carrying so much weight on it, that it temporarily eases the strain on your shoulder. And in cold weather, it kept my fingers warm.

As an ex soldier I can confirm: when wearing body armor, it's comfortable to hold your vest. Especially in hot areas, you can hold your vest away from your body slightly to allow for more airflow.

Same in the military. Wearing body armor feels uncomfortable after the 5th hour and it’s feels so good to take it off

When you wear bags in front and in back, put your hand on bag’s straps. It’s comfortable.

My PD says they do this so their hands aren’t hovering over the weapons. Makes you more approachable, because even just passive hands floating over a gun can cause peoples’ anxiety to spike

As someone who was in football, our shoulder pads are very similar to bullet proof vests, and yeah, it’s just because it’s comfortable lol.

Yup. Takes the pressure off the shoulders. 15 years as an infantryman taught me that you will take comfort where you can find it. :)
