My club does a one day class for people to get their tech license every year. This is the radio that we include in the cost of the class, and we program em for em with our local repeaters and other useful frequencies. Last week was our class and we got about 30 people on board into ham radio. We never would have that kind of response to our class if we tried to get them a more expensive radio. Oh, and I have 5 of em :D 3 tri power, 2 dual power

Looks like a pretty great deal! I EDC an ear mic similar to that one. Really helps to not miss radio calls when it's chilling on your belt with the volume too low.

The UV-5R was my "gateway drug" that opened the door. I'm grateful for it and I still have a bunch of them around the house.

Mike! Spot on brother. You just can’t beat a package like that to get on the air. Better yet to have in any Ham’s arsenal! Thanks

Hi Mike, I really like this video. A UV5R was my first radio.
Thank you for being awesome and for guiding me through the first steps of my ham journey. I wouldn't be here if not for you. Thanks.

I had my UV5R for about 2 years before I got my license and upgraded to a bigger radio. Still use my UV5R when I travel as it's easy to pack on a plane, and after upgrading the antenna, it's a fantastic little radio. Great first rig setup.

I like the Bluetooth programmer idea . Back when I got started . WISH was my friend . Back then I could stock up on the extra stuff for $1. Each plus shipping . That package is a steal of a deal . A friend of mine got one close to it and paid more . I have so many uv5r radios and gear to them . It is hard not to run into them into them in my house . From the mini repeater setup to the motorcycle helmet setup . I do not need a dedicated motorcycle helmet communication system . I have a uv5r ! Just need the others to have there ham ticket and radios . Nice vid ! 73 !

A radio that doubles as a tire chock if your parking on a hill. LOL. I have 9 of them, but don't tell anyone. I park on hills a lot.

I work for about a month or 2 a year in my yard working on lobster traps, and the boat getting ready for the season. I usually have 3 going on the work table. 1 for broadcast FM and the fire ems paging, then the other 2 monitor local repeaters. I can usually get 2 full days of battery in monitor function. Even if you only want a portable broadcast fm receiver its worth the money.

Thanks for the great video! These are awesome radios to start out with, I don't have a UV-5R myself but I do have the UV-S9X3 that I keep in my POTA/Go-box and I love it. Like you said, the battery last forever on receive and still quite a while on TX on these things. I still need the pick up a UV-5R myself just to play with one. 73 and have fun at the parks!

Excellent presentation! This is great for new Hams so they don’t get overwhelmed by what to start with. 73 Blessings NM5SP

My first radios were 1. hackrf, 2. sdr dongle, then 3. baofeng ... then I got my license. Before getting my license I would listen to nets, anything and everything. Oh BTW, do not get a hackrf unless you like hacking rf ( i do and it's a great device BUT expensive). I recommend the sdr dongle and boafeng. I dig the package you're promoting, but I have to say .... The minute I got a japanese handheld it changed everything. Japanese radios are so much better, but if money is tight, you'll do well with a baofeng. Thank for sharing the video, brother!

I didn't start with a UV-5R but, I own two and have given several of them as gifts. Great radio for Go Bag, travel, emergency communications for car.

ok, watched this video so I ordered one based on your recommendation. I normally stick with the major manufactures but all this talk about Baofeng guess I should have one. Worst case I can always use another measurement tool.

Another good thing to get is the USB cable that conects charger, so you can charge from a battery bank

I'm going for my foundation license in 🇦🇺 next month. I have the Wouxon KG-UV9P "X" back ordered, it's not released yet. Getting from Better Safe Radios. I was avoiding the UV-5R but may have to get one till the other one finally gets here. I think you are right, good as a spare radio that I can play with in the meantime, cheap as chips!. Great video buddy.🍺👍🤓🇦🇺

Great video Mike,
Even though when I started in Amateur Radio I a VX-7R that I had inherited. I still bought a UV-5R as a backup or when I prefer not to carry the Yeasu.
Your advice is on point and I couldn't agree more, it id a tremendous entry level package you have there.
I have even activated SOTA multiple times with mine just because I can and to give the haters a treat.
Again great job and advice. 73
