Don’t Bother Overclocking an i5 13600K…

Let’s be real here, you’ve already watched Linus’, Steve’s or.. Steve’s video on these new chips. You know how they perform and how they compare to last gen and Ryzen 7000. So let’s shake things up and do something a little different. I’ve spent the last week overclocking and testing the i5 13600K to see if it’s even worth doing - and I’ve found some rather interesting results.

Tom's hardware did an overclock on the 13600k at 5.6ghz on an rtx 4090 and it matched the 13900k stock in most games. So the reason you aren't seeing gains could be a gpu bottleneck not the cpu

maybe its actually worth it to buy a 13600k, for a DDR4 system in case you got a ton of fast DDR4 laying around, and just clock the snot out of it, for a 3090/4090 system. at least if you dont need the 14+ cores of the big chips, and only really game. ALSO, PLZ start telling people what system you test in, its a bad trend that more and more reviewers are forgetting this. Put it in the intro or text under the video. we need details, or comparisons to our own stuff is imposible.

13600k + 3060... the bottleneck is not your cpu man

3060 with a 13600k kinda killed the vid. Title doesn't make too much sense either, seems it's a great overclocker?

My 3060 is the bottleneck on my i5 12600KF on 1080p high settings. Considering this is even faster than my CPU, you ought to use a better card unless you do the test as 720p low settings to ensure GPU isn't going to be the bottleneck.

Basically, it means that 13600K is future proof. I can keep it and change a few generations of GPUs, like I did with my 2500K which serves me for 11 years now, and is doing great with much younger GTX 1060.

You are wrong that the 3060 is a good test for this. Alot of folks are upgrading their old rigs or getting into pc gaming and will go for this 13600k due to the cost savings and overclock ability. I plan to pair this with the RTX 4080 and will play nicely together I feel.

Incredible video man! The gaming results, as I can see u are clearly seeing a GPU bottleneck, the performance increase when CPU is overclocked is above this, probably this the RTX 2080 u will can only see this ate 720p

Good video. I came in thinking you were going to say it’s a bad overclocker and I was thinking that’s ridiculous. I’m currently running my 13600k @ 1.244V 5.6Ghz P-cores 4.5Ghz E-cores and I’d like to try going to a by-core OC but the new BIOS has me a little confused so right now it’s just all core boost

If you're using XTU theres literally no reason not to test and find your best stable overclock and save it. You can literally run the overclock at will by simply launching xtu and clicking a button when ever you need it and leaving it stock at all other times.

Interesting results. I have a 3080 and just ordered a 13600k, expecting to OC it. I game in 4K so I don't expect to notice a difference there, but I do occasional video editing and will likely see some improvement there. However, coming from an i7-3770, the 13600k at stock is already going to be mind-blowing with render times. So yeah, no need to overclock.

gonna wait for 13600 non k version reviews then

I neither agree nor disagree. I just think that claiming ´not to bother overclocking the 13600k´ equals saying ´save your money, get a B760 board and get a 13500 instead. But I guess people want to have the option (so do I), so it´s perfetly valid, regardless of it being better out of the box.

Not being judgemental here. I myself am still deciding between 13600k and 13700K. I had just 2 PCs in the last 2 decades. Hence my preference for a long-term i7. But If I were planning on changing every 4 years or so I´d pick the i5. Maybe I will, cause I hate watercooling.

I was wanting to pair this CPU with an RTX 4080 for 3440x1440p gaming and wanted to see if I could get away with running a smaller 240mm AIO to keep this cool with a very mild overclock maybe 5.5Ghz on the P cores and 4Ghz on the E cores while under 70deg C total...seems very doable with this chip I think I'm sold! great info on the clock speeds and performance impact

13600k runs at 5.1 all core out of the box Wow!

I bought a 13600k and it can be clocked at quite high frequencies, but with 3080 even in 1080P there is no difference in fps, nor any extra difference in consumption and temperatures.
I tried 5.1GHz - 1.18V vs 5.6Ghz 1.32V and the difference when playing was about 25-40W and about 8-10 degrees.

I dont think its fair to draw conclusions about the cpu performance in gaming, when you tested with a 3060. People buy cpus for >5 years, so if you upgrade the gpu later, the cpu is still the same. You should test with a better gpu

Please do the comparison to 7000 disabling E cores like you did with 12th gen.

Probably worth trying again with the Thermal Grizzly contact frame, to see if that would give more OC headroom from the lower temps.

I really don’t understand the logic behind “if your buying a 4090 why are you buying an i5 instead of a i9” like throwing away money is ever a good idea.
