Triple Play: 3 New Crumb Piecing Quilts with Jenny Doan of Missouri Star (Video Tutorial)

Triple Play is a favorite tradition here at Missouri Star. Once a month, Jenny, Misty, and Natalie each demonstrate their own, unique take on a favorite block, technique, or template. In this episode, the talented Doan ladies show off three fabulous, scrap-busting crumb pieced projects.

Jenny's starts with a crash course in crumb piecing. She brings out her tub of scraps and transforms those little bits and pieces into 10 inch squares. Then, those blocks get stitched together with a crumb-pieced border that looks like a scrappy, wonky piano key border.

Natalie's "Carpenter's Square" quilt is made with fat quarters and 5-inch squares of crumb piecing. Her fabric is the Bloom On Fat Quarter Bundle by Maywood Studio. Her layout is beautifully fresh and modern, but it's really just a simple charm quilt!

Misty's "Full Circle" quilt was also made with the Bloom On Fat Quarter Bundle by Maywood Studio. Misty's built her crumb pieced-blocks with strip sets, which was so quick and easy. Then she used the orange peel templates to cut out pretty, curved blocks that are appliqued to 10 inch squares. Truth be told, this quilt looks SO much more difficult than it really is!

My favorite this time is the orange peel quilt. It’s amazing to see your creativity in designing such different quilts.

Watching you guys is like going to our church - we can choose from 3 services: "contemporary, traditional, or mixed!" Inspired by all 3! Thanks!

I absolutely loved all of them. I’m fascinated by crumb piecing. Which is a good thing since I ha a bin that is totally running over with them. Thanks for the great videos

It is beautiful, I did mine as a souvenir of all the different projects that I made pandemic time. Like Mitsy I sew all my pieces together big or small and placed the ruler in random position to create the block.

Lots of fun watching all the mass confusion. Loved Misty’s quilt. It looked like 30s fabrics as it was hanging even though I know it wasn’t. Those are the fabrics that really speak to me. Just so adorable!

I love making crumb quilts. I've been quilting since 1992 so you can imagine how many scraps I have, so I started using my scraps after watching Darlene Michaud on YouTube.
I now have 5 lap quilts! Great way to use up scraps and to always be sewing! I don't think I'll ever be done. I will be moving up to 10" instead of the 8" I've been making.

I have found that if you want to make the blocks cohesive, you can add either turquoise or red. These colors would also look fabulous as sashing. I used to belong to a quilt group where we did a lot of block exchanges and those colors tied all the blocks together. I love love love the concept of no waste! Thanks guys!

Gals you did it again! I'm not really a scrappy quilt kind of gal but Missy and Natalie's quilts did hit it out of the park. I can also appreciate the effortless stitching of Jenny's blocks. Way to go ladies! Thanks for all your inspiration!

I have been making crumb blocks for years, and many times I make them out of one color, all pink, greens, blues, etc. They are so much fun!

I learned doing this onto a 9x9 inch piece of muslin, standing at a treadle sewing machine, because if I sat I could not reach the pedal. Ethel, the woman who helped raise me after my father died & owned the machine, called it a crazy quilt. I did a quilt like that which I was proud to sleep under. Later I had the mumps & was home from school 6 weeks and I sat & hand sewed the piecing for a wedding ring quilt. Ethel finished it & gave it to me on my wedding day. The only quilt we had when we started our.

This is what I needed! I have been working on a complex quilt. I NEEDED a fun easy divergence. No rules and no quilt police. Thanks again for a great quilt idea.
