Actually, this is how David killed Goliath.

David first evades the spear throw of Goliath.
Then, David use the sling to knock down Goliath to the ground.
Finally, David took Goliath's sword to decapitate Goliath.

So, technically, Goliath died by decapitation.

Talented slingman could throw stones with their slings fast enough to break the sound barrier. When the bible says "it sunk into his head", that was literal. David essentially shot Goliath in the head with the biblical equivalent of a gun.

The important detail that kept missing in these reenactment is the fact that when Goliath charged David, he actually ran towards Goliath which might added force in the velocity to sink the stone in Goliath's forehead. Goliath also fell face forward, meaning he was also moving in forward motion. The bible said that David only killed Goliath after with his own javelin (or scimitar) and beheaded him so it's possible that Goliath was still alive when he had a stone sunk on his forehead.
