Shatner was making a joke by referencing an old b&w Twilight Zone episode. In the episode he was a passenger on a plane. But when he looked out on the wing, there was a creature looking back at him. The creature was sabotaging the plane, hence Shatner’s joke.

Some of my favorite moments are when Stephen doesn't realize how long the intro to his segment is and it startles him. Never stop awkwardly pausing Stephen!
