Despite two failures, NASA has come up with a new repair plan, still aiming to launch its massive Moon rocket before the first orbital flight of SpaceX's Starship!
How will they carry out the plan?
And will it really help SLS get off the ground before Starship?
Let’s find out in today’s episode of Great SpaceX!

Fate has not been particularly kind to NASA’s new mega-rocket!
The initial launch date, the end of 2016, was long gone.
Countless delays meant the SLS rocket became almost overshadowed by its main competitor, the SpaceX Starship. A chrome-adorned, retro-styled vehicle developed by Elon Musk’s fan-favorite corporation.
The SLS, in its current configuration, can generate 8.8 million pounds of thrust, which is enough to earn it the title of the world’s most powerful rocket. According to SpaceX, the Starship is roughly twice as powerful as its competitor, and capable of generating around 17 million pounds of thrust – an amount that no future variant of the SLS could even come close to achieving.

To be resolved, thank you.

drag SLS off of the pad to the scrap heap before it gets someone hurt.

The difference between Space-X and NASA is that Elon Musk knows when to send a bad design to the scrapyard!

“We won’t rush the launch of Starship” Definition: We won’t stop throwing endless requirements upon SpaceX until SLS launches first. When/if SLS ever does launch first, it will be the shortest victory lap in history.

To me it is irrelevant which launches first. I just hope both succeed.

I worked at the pads as a technician in the 90's on the Space Shuttle. Our engineers at Pad B had the same hydrogen leak problem at the interface with the engines. We built an enclosure around it, fixed it. So, it's been done before.

Remember the what could go wrong. that jenky launch tower isn't helping either.

I feel like I have seen this movie before. I grew up watching Apollo. 12 Year old me expected great things from NASA. The Shuttle was supposed to be quickly and cheaply reusable. It ate money and was never on time. The Shuttle and it's problems live on in SLS. Minus the reusability.

What do I think of them trying to fix a hydrogen leak issue at the launchpad? Good thing it's an unmanned launch

Whether or not SLS gets off the ground before Starship is irrelevant. It may get there first but it will be years before another launch and by then Starship may have numerous lauches. On cost alone Starship will put SLS out of business.

Successful launch or not...the SLS is a failure in terms of cost, reusability...and its future value to space flight. It's an old dinosaur that most likely will never see more than two or three launches.

If, a big if, SLS launches 🚀 first it could be the last. Because when StarShip comes on line, all other rockets 🧨 will be obsolete. SpaceX is the future of space travel, enjoyed watching the video ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Definitely a Government Operation. Rechargeable batteries.... that what.... have to be removed to be recharge? charge?

Elon doesn't care a bit if SLS launches first. He is focused on B7S24. He needs to have a successful static fire of the 33 B7 Raptor 2 engines as quickly as possible.

But his Aug 2022 estimate of 1 to 12 months for the first Starship orbital launch likely indicates that he's anticipating problems with the Raptor 2s and that static fire. Starship is stuck on that particular milestone and Elon realizes that he may need more time, possibly measured in months, to achieve that goal.

I'm not really convinced that there is any race to see who goes first. I'm fairly sure that either of them will launch as soon as they can do it safely.

Once you start holding back the competition, you FAILED!!! Cancel that waste of taxpayers money.

I find it humorous when the announcer said Musks rocket is "Retro" style. It may be reminiscent of Flash Gordon, but the SLS looks like a 60 year old Saturn V with side boosters. The fact that Space-X is using Stainless steel and a large aerodynamic modular design with methane fuel, is nothing short of brilliance by comparison to the aging technology of the SLS.

The SLS is really everything we have come to expect of government efficiency.

I just hope that congress wakes up and this one is the last of the SLS.

They are desperate to launch SLS once so they can justify the enormous cost. After that they will can the project.

Even if the SLS launches before Starship, it’s still late!
