Thank you for bringing this up! Agree that without process improvement, the reduction may not be long lasting as emissions intensity of a garment would not go down. Improving procceses (to reduce emissions intensity of a garment) and reducing the number of garments produced must happen together. And with proper emissions accounting methodology, even emissions from outsourced production should be captured. Companies can of course be very astute with their communication/ marketing claim, so it's important to read the fine prints and hold them accountable!

I've been reflecting lately about the things in my life that I love and that have endured--my favorite mug that I've had for 29 years, the sweater I gave to my husband of 20 years three years before we got married, the green trunk sitting in my conservatory that all of my worldly possessions fit into 28 years ago, the perfect embroidery sample (with not a single modesty stitch) that my grandmother's Aunt Beulah stitched which inspired my grandmother to become a fashion designer...
My motto as a young woman was to buy quality and take care of it. Now, as a middle-aged woman I realize that it's that motto that has made me wealthy. I'm wealthy because I've spent 28 years not replacing anything I own. I've been caring instead of neglecting; I've been mending, making due or doing without.
To justify that level of effort, quality matters, and in oneself as much as one's possessions. Imagine how much more effort we could put into doing good works we love rather than just replacing what we've already bought if we insist on producing quality.

Yes and this doesn't just apply to the fashion industry - using the carbón offset rules. They'll buy a bunch of trees in the developing world where it costs pittance but they use that to balance out their carbon footprint. If a company is generating the carbon in one country they should have to offset it in the same country.
