The Rheumatologist Prescribed Methotrexate To Me!

This video is about methotrexate that is prescribed by rheumatologists for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and also other autoimmune arthritis like psoriatic arthritis and palindromic rheumatism and polymyalgia rheumatica. Methotrexate is one of the most important anti-rheumatoid arthritis medications.
Due to the fact that some but not all patients who use methotrexate get side effects like nausea and stomach discomfort, patients who are prescribed methotrexate by their rheumatologist and who are warned of its possible side effects, are always hesitant to start using the medicine. This video is a reassurance to those patients who are skeptical about methotrexate that it can be effective without any side effects in a good percent of patients and if they get side effects from it, these are not dangerous and the decision can be taken to simply stop the medicine. They should give it its fair try in all cases.

I've been taking methotrexate since I was 13 years old. My vitals get tested every 3 months. I always feel like I should 'try to stop taking these meds'. However, methotrexate keeps me healthy and alive. 12 years later I'm still learning to accept the fact I need this heavy medication to function. I especially recognise the fact that it functions like a painkiller to me, too. But, every time I end up at the GP or one time in the emergency room, they tell me I should reconsider taking methotrexate because it limits the medication they can give me in that moment. I can't get NSAIDs. They don't always seem to understand that methotrexate is what keeps me functioning like a normal person. If I hadn't had methotrexate, I would have never leave my house because of the pain. I would have never been able to build the functioning life I've got now as a child psychologist. Without mtx, I'd at best be depressed.

If all doctors would be as professional, knowledgeable and well spoken as this one we would be living in a better world. Brilliant video!

Thank you Dr. for your video I have been taking Methotrexate for almost 2 months now. It is especially for the pain in my hip It doesn't take all the pain away but enough so I can function and do my daily tasks. As far as side effects are concerned I don't have a problem. I would definitely tell anyone to at least try it because it is a good medication

I have been taking it for a year, and exactly like you say, I hesitated for a year before that to take it because of all my research on google. I ended up taking it because my RA was getting out of control. Since taking it, I have hardly any symptoms of RA and I live very well! I felt some minor side effects at the beginning but overall I would suggest to anyone who is recommended it by their Rheumatologist to give it a go for at least a month to make a personal decision. Especially if diagnosed early, M can help with remission eventually. Good luck everyone! If you are watching this video, you must be facing some health concerns..To conclude, it works for me and I wish I had taken it sooner.

I have mild side effects when taking MTX (not always), mostly nausea, mouth ulcers and fatigue the day I take the tablets and sometimes the following day. But, my doctor prescribed me folic acid (5mg) to be taken 3 times a week instead of just one: I have less side effects, I feel better, although not a huge difference. Anyway, MTX has made me much good in my PsA.

Thank you for your video, doctor. All your videos looks to me really good, science based and useful. Muchas gracias.

Thank you Dr. Hatem for the info., it’s good to hear this medicine Methotrexate has less side effects and more beneficial to patients, most of them are suffering from other diseases and they can’t afford anymore any problems or pain.
