I think one of the things I loved hearing from my church was the idea that if an atheist helps someone, they’re doing it for completely unselfish reasons. They don’t believe in a reward for their actions. They don’t believe they’ll go to Heaven. They’re doing it because they want to, because it’s right, and for no other reason. It’s something that changed everything for me when it came to my beliefs.

I feel like too many of my fellow Christians forget the fact that following Christ doesn't automatically make you a good person, and not following him automatically makes you a bad one. We are all humans, and we all have the same capacity of good and bad.

If you need something like heaven and hell to deter you from hurting others, then the simple fact of the matter is your a bad person. There are consequences aside from eternal damnation or bliss. I’ll never be able to be around that person again. Others will treat me worse and frankly, I’d deserve it.

If all people made it their goal to help others and not abuse others help, we wouldn’t need to die to get to heaven, we’d already be living in it.
