Some people say, either you’re a maker … or a taker. And today makers and takers are battling for America’s soul.

In an earlier video I explain who the "Takers” are:

Here I talk about the "Makers."

A Classic Stossel from 2010.

As a friend of mine once said, "money doesn't make you happy, especially when you don't have enough of it". :)

I had numerous jobs as I grew up and worked my way through college. My employers most always scheduled my work around school. I was, and still am, very grateful for the people who owned businesses that provided me with opportunity and money, to achieve my goals. I am so disgusted with society today that vilifies business owners and calls hard work 'slave labor'.

Depends on how people handled money before they won. Most lottery winners handled money poorly BEFORE they won and end up blowing it all and end up with a case of the SADS = Stupid And Dumb Suckers. Those who earned their money like that woman before they won - are more likely to be able to expand a business and use money responsibility. Same goes for inherited money.

Money doesn't buy happiness, but often it can provide the breathing space, the opportunity to find what makes you happy.

Stewart's grocery store in Brazoria, TEXAS, has a similar history as the deli in John's report. Many kids got their first job with the Stewarts family store.
They treat their employees well and have a great meat market and lunch counter, the very best hamburgers in the county. Many of our local kids had their first job with them. During hurricane Harvey, they ran generators and fed anyone needing a meal, as did Kenjo's BBQ just down the road. A very fine example of good folks offering their services and products.

Having skills are important for an independent society. We shouldn't lose any.

That mustache brings me happiness. I miss seeing that. Dear Stossel, please bring it back!

I am a disabled veteran. Those monthly checks themselves didn’t make me happy, but they did allow me to move into my own place, in a beautiful part of the country, near my family. That made me very happy. The healthcare coverage allowed me to get the mental health help I needed, and that made me happier, the dental coverage helped me not loose a tooth, and that made me happier.
Money itself doesn’t make you happy, but the things it allows you to have certainly do.

Let me win the lottery and I will try very hard to be happy.

Does the cupcake lady have to conform to umpteen regulations for her cupcake business? It is because of so many regulations that it has become harder and harder to succeed from nothing. After all most regulations are established by large firms that intend their regulations to stifle competition.

Most lottery winners don't know how to manage and grow their money. Those that do are set for life.

Definitely a classic. Thank you, Mr. Stossel.

You can start a business and make it for yourself, except for zoning regulations, permitting requirements, occupational licensing, etc.

Did you see the story about the teen-aged girl hauled off in handcuffs for the "crime" of operating an unlicensed fruit stand? When NYC had stopped issuing licenses?

My best friend won $250k on a scratch off. He went broke in 6 months, but I can assure you that it was a very happy 6 months. Then the depression set in. Lol

Money will not bring you happiness, happiness is a internal thing. More money can help, but it can also hurt.

I'm constantly amazed at how many people don't understand the simple point of this video.

Challenge accepted.. that fella could hand me lottery winnings and come back in a year to see how happy I am about it.
There's always an exception to prove the rule. I volunteer as tribute.

Well done Sir, this is very interesting, my instinct to no longer buy lotto tickets now makes sense.
