The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 Is A Segment Leading Midsize Premium Truck

With the midsize truck segment once again heating up, #GMC wants to make a big splash with the all-new 3rd generation #GMCCanyon for 2023. Just like the Colorado twin, the redesigned #CanyonAT4X and #CanyonDenali represent the top of the hierarchy, while the #AT4X is the first time we are seeing luxury and off-road capable come together in the smaller #Canyon. All versions of this truck also come standard with the high output 2.7L turbo engine making 310 HP and a best-in-class 430 lb-ft of torque.

One small thing I always appreciate about your reviews is you always show what the hazard lights look like running.

Just watched numerous reviews and without a doubt, yours is one of the best. Getting tired of these reviewers who guess about specs or flat out give incorrect info.

The price jump on the Canyon removed it right off my shopping list. I had a 2019 GMC Canyon V6 4x4 in an Extended Cab with the convenience and tow packages, as well as the spray-in bedliner. The sticker was $34, 500. The 2023s are now starting at about $43K now and you only get a 5' bed and no option for an extended cab. The reliability of my 2019 was a nightmare. The AC had to be replaced three times in less than three years, and the transmission and transfer case also needed warranty repairs are well in that time. GM was a nightmare to deal with, in summer 2019, the truck was 3 months old and the AC failed the first time. It then took GM 53 days to replace the AC, and only after my state's AG got involved. GM Corporate representative was unapologetic and was actually downright rude about the whole situation. At the prices GM wants these days for these trucks, it is a hard pass.

Nice truck and ideally all I need but I went with the Silverado and 3.0 liter duramax. Love it!

I own a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado High Country with 6.2L. I test drove a 2023 GMC Elevation model which is the base Canyon model for the GMC line. As my Silverado is the pinnacle for the Chevy 1/2 ton line, I was very curious about the new Canyon/Colorado series of trucks. I was more than pleasantly surprised at this base model in almost every aspect. I loved the smaller size right away as it was so easy to pull into spots compared to my Silverado, of course. The engine was quite peppy but to Redline review felt more like a diesel in the way the power was delivered. It's nothing like my 6.2, but nonetheless very peppy and certainly up to most any task. I'm seriously considering downsizing. However, I'm more interested in the AT4 model me thinks at the moment. Just the right combination for me at this time. But still in consideration at this moment.

I have a highly modded 17ZR2 and yesterday I test drove a new AT4. The interior is very nice compared to the Colorado. Seating comfort was on par with my ZR. The 310hp L3B 2.7t was about the same as my tuned 3.6 LGZ. Good looking truck. I may have a chance to get in a AT4X.

Now GMC needs to come out with a Maverick competition just to have a smaller truck than what used to be the small truck. 👌🏼

I love and want this truck, but like others the price is a little hard to digest. My dad bought a full-size Ram Rebel in 2018 for $47k (yes, I know—pre-COVID, but still), and both the Canyon and Colorado can push into the mid-60s. The Bison versions are probably gonna crest $70k. Good lord.

Also, I know not everybody cares about these things, but the hard plastic on the top of the doors is really unacceptable. That seems more like old school GM, which (for example) once decided against giving the Yukon Denali real wood because they didn't want it to step on the Escalade's toes. As we mentioned, these trucks are NOT cheap, so the interior should be reflective of the price and not some stupid hierarchy that GM's trying to maintain.

I have to say these trucks including the Chevy Colorado are the best-looking mid-size trucks in the market today. They look more masculine than other pickup trucks out there. I'm talking to you Ranger and Tacoma.

Really like the design and tech upgrade, but that backseat and MPG kills it for me

52k is not similarly equipped full size money. Let's be honest. That is like saying a 3 series costs the same as a 5 series (since the top end of one overlaps with the bottom end of the other).

Materials are still too cheap for the high price. I've been completely priced out of the truck market with prices getting more absurd every year. I think all truck manufacturers will figure out very soon that they've gotten too damn greedy because there are precious few buyers who can afford these insane prices.

Excellent review, skilled host. Thank you.

Small clarification. Goodyear calls these 'maximum traction' tires, not 'mud' terrain. Probably a little better than the Territory ATs, but i wouldn't consider them true mud tires like KM3s.

Just a great review! Still thinking if I should get the canyon at4 or the at4 x. Im not a fan of the seats in the 1st edition at4x trim, but thats just me.
