I'm taking the recently released OpenSUSE Leap 15 for a quick spin. I'm installing the Plasma version of Leap using the net installer.

Good Old KDE. Only thing is they suffer from the Mortal Kombat Syndrome (everything that should spelt with a C is a K)

Love been using them since their 13.x days!....haven't tried Tumbleweed, but have always used their "stable" releases....nothing ever breaks!....LoL!

Great info. I got this distro today in a Linux magazine, and might just try it out sometime. I've been using Mint Cinnamon for a while, which has been very good. Subscribed and Hello from Liverpool UK.

Thanks for the networking info....that has been a barrier in the past when I've tried to install openSuse....kind of a head palm moment to see how easy that is.

Nice look at the software. Once I can get the final parts for a machine I have laying around I'll put Suse on it.

Opensuse is amazing, it is my main distro, everything works. I think i will wait to install this version or maybe jump to other distro to try new experiences. Nice review!

Finally I know the strong and complicated password, thank opensuse ^_^

Great Video. I used SUSE before and it is a polished distro with a great control center (Yast2, Yet Another System Tool i think)

For some reason I allmost allways skip OpenSuse and Fedora for testing it. Might have something to do with bad experiences from the past.
But, aside from some minor issues this looks quite nice!
Maybe I'll should give it more attention in the future.

Nice vid, Thanks for sharing DT!

Excellent review. I give it an A+. I have never watched an OpenSUSE review. It has been on my list of things to try, but I am so happy with my current distro, that you would have to pry it from my cold dead hands. I do not know or understand why distros choose a certain kernel. I am using 4.16.12 and will probably be on 4.17 by mid-June. I update my kernel each week, for example. 4.16.11 to 4.16.12, and after about 15 times, have not yet had an issue. However, I doubt I need a kernel more recent than the one in OpenSUSE as I currently have a 5 year old machine. I was surprised you hadn't heard of Marble, but you have heard of rare things like Mutt. Marble is a great program for students ( try rotating and zooming in ). It is obvious that all the distros have come a long way. Leap 15 is almost user friendly to a new user, or at least one who has tried Linux Mint and wants to dive deeper. I think Linuxland will be better when there is just one really awesome installer that offers a choice of both an easy simple install or a custom install. I think that is one area where Linux can improve. With flatpaks gaining popularity, I believe the next generation of installer, should explain that things can be installed later much easier. GIMP is 2.10.2 in flatpak. Firefox is 62.0. It appears that Leap 16 will most likely be another small step forward. I am curious what versions of wayland the new distros offer, and what compositor wayland is using. My favorite Linux command is: "inxi -F" I have no idea how to use "startx, " but need to learn. I have not tried any KDE games in way over a year, so I would be curious if any of them have improved. I have not personally noticed any improvements in any repo games in the past 2 years.

Gnome Boxes is now a flatpak at version 3.28.5, so nearly every popular Gnome app is a flatpak now. I am still waiting on Mahjonng.

I think that the current KDE LTS is really excellent. They've trimmed resource usage, fixed lots of bugs and ship a great set of applications - definitely now the best of the full feature DEs IMO by some margin (KDE/Gnome/Mate/Cinnamon)
IIRC Suse are the only distro to allow root user functionally in Dolphin, at least when I tried Tumbleweed some months ago. KDE block this functionality by default.

Leap 15 behaves very well, I managed to make it cold-boot KDE/Plasma5 in about 3 seconds on a regular basis:
_»Startup finished in 1.363s (kernel) + 703ms (initrd) + 780ms (userspace) = 2.847s«_ according to systemd-analyze.
I also enjoy the presentation of packages to update in YaST2, complete with descriptions and lists of bug fixes.

DT in his first sentence: A new version of OpenSUSE Tumbleweed was released yesterday. Let's take a look...

Me: checking the title again *confused*

DT in his next sentence: OpenSUSE released a new version of Leap...

Me: 😅 🎶 never gonna give you up ... 🎶

nice review but just a tip, you should have showed how to add the packman repo so you can install vlc, mpv, steam and so on :)

I dont understand the OpenSuse package managed. I always manage to break it in that it weirdly randomly installs and removes packages :D I guess i just never bothered to find out why it seems that way

Another great tutorial. Can I ask what software you use to create your screencasts?

I actually enjoyed OpenSUSE a few years ago. I ran it for a few months and didn't have any major problems with it. I just got the distro hopping bug and moved on to try other things. I may give the latest another go.

Polished, balanced and powerful. For me, the best distro around. It is suitable for newcomers to linux and professionals.

damn, you sound like me when playing a game without going through the tutorials. I just guess and click on random buttons and surprisingly, most things worked.
