in cold conditions i drag then pause. its a very small drag like half a second. in summer i either twitch it or crank it like a crank bait

What's your favorite reel for jerkbaits

You'll catch the most fish in the colder months if you keep a cadence. Change it up with different speeds and pause lengths but as soon as you catch one you should be able to catch more with the same cadence.
