The 'Indian Problem'

Показать описание
As American power and population grew in the 19th century, the United States gradually rejected the main principle of treaty-making—that tribes were self-governing nations—and initiated policies that undermined tribal sovereignty. For Indian nations, these policies resulted in broken treaties, vast land loss, removal and relocation, population decline, and cultural decimation.

The "Indian Problem" was produced to serve as the central video in the exhibition "Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations," on view at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. This video introduces visitors to the section of the exhibition titled "Bad Acts, Bad Paper."

"To leave them in possession of their country is to leave their country in wildness"

This mentality is insane. Stealing from someone because they refuse to treat their possession as you would like them to treat it. Frankly, insane.

My advice for native people is that they should never stop speaking their native language

Everyone knows about Nazi Germany, and the genocide of the Jews. But, where is the history about the genocide of my people? Where is our Anne Frank? Where is the remembrance and memorial of my people?

Here we are 500 years later and nothing has changed. In the 2010 census, the Indians in Arizona were listed as "other". Therefore, now during COVID 19, they have been overlooked by the feds.

500 years later we have to admit, the Indians, the Native Americans, had the right idea about life.

We are still here. I'm a registered member of the Modoc/Klamath tribe. They tried their hardest to erase us and wipe us out. Btw broken treaties, removal, force assimilation, blood quantum regulations, detribalization, child removal act, and even denying our religious freedom, natives communities have gone through so much but, we are still here. We will continue to stand for justice and will continue to stand and fight for our land.🧡

Sum it up.
They were slaughtered. The remaining survivors were rounded up by the u.s. army, marched hundreds of miles to sign a treaty to be allowed to live and walk to a new home with boundaries they weren't allowed to leave. Smh

They haven't changed. They're the same people here today.

The level of unresolved sadness and grief from all the loss and suffering must be immense.

I grew up in Sweden and I've always held a tremendous amount of respect to the native americans for their lifestyle, beliefs, leaders, tribes and respect towards mother nature, we have so much to learn from them, and I feel so sad to what colonial powers did to these people and still do.

Well done. This should be shown in schools as a mandatory history lesson.

What a moving & beautiful quote at the end: "When we were forced to leave our lands, we took the fires with us; we took the embers along. Then, when we got to Oklahoma, we rekindled the old fire. Old home or new home, it is the same fire." To me, this really sums up the ideology the American Natives had to adopt if they wanted to keep their family together & try to preserve their way of life.. The strength & beauty of these people is awe-inspiring.. great vid!

😢 tears for my people who were murdered. Praise for the ones who had the strength to survive so I could be here today to witness the past, present and future. ❤
