Cool video!! I’ve been playing drums for a very long time(forty years) 😳 I’ve never taken lessons and I’ve got so many bad habits!!! Do what this guy tells ya and you’ll be way ahead of the game!!! 🎶❤️🎶

Thanks JR. I'm getting some help from your vids. Something that REALLY helped my balance on the kit is doing suitcase carries (AKA farmer walks). Grab a kettlebell or dumbbell (or whatever) and walk around carrying it like a suitcase. Then after x amount of steps switch to the other hand. Doing these a few times a week has helped my posture and balance on the kit ENORMOUSLY! Better balance, better posture = relaxed playing and considerably more power. Just my $.02.

Love your playing and all your content man. Playing to loops the last several years has definitely transformed my playing for the better. I stress it to my own students all the time, but in these days of distance learning, the onus falls on them to follow through. I’m afraid it often falls on deaf ears.

A fun and easy loop I do is to set the metronome on 16/4 and mute out select notes to achieve the cascara pattern. Set your metronome to 480 and boing- there are your syncopated 16ths at 120bpm. If you get bored with that, move your “1” 1 eight to the right or left. It’s a whole other party then.

Also, “djembe time” is an app that I have gotten endless practice from. It has a bunch of west African rhythms to play to. Fully modifiable.

Cheers Jeff, from Santa Cruz, ca

Super helpful, the truth about becoming a structural and complete percussionist. Perfecting the craft takes hours of work. Thanks for sharing. Great video!

So true, loops & playing along to your favorite bands tracks is the way to go. Never heard a Metronome groove...ever!

Great advice! Loving this channel. Years of making electronic music has been great for my drumming. I may not be the most technical drummer (this channel will help me with that!) but my tempo and pocket are super solid from years of listening to steady tempos. These days i program subtle tempo changes into electronic tracks (for example going down 1 bpm during the second half of a drum fill to push the feel a little)… but it is so helpful to play to something besides a metronome!
