Borderlands Movie - What The HELL Happened?

Gearbox Software's Borderlands may not be the first to come to mind when you think of iconic franchises. Nevertheless, it's popular, beloved by its fans and provides a fun looter shooter experience with each new entry. So why not make a movie?

The good news is that someone did, releasing it on August 9th in cinemas worldwide. The bad news: It's absolutely horrendous. It amassed roughly $8.8 million of a $110-120 million budget, so audiences either hated it or couldn't be bothered to watch. Critics call it the worst video game adaptation of all time, with negative reviews left and right.

What happened? Is it the production hell that's gone on since the film's announcement in 2015? Is it the miscasting with actors who clearly didn't fit the roles? Is Borderlands just not prime for adaptation? Find out our thoughts here.

I saw someone mention this in a review, this is a PG13 movie aimed at teenagers which is why it’s not rated R . Who thought teenage boys would come to theaters for two 60 year old women ?

Mistake 1. They made a R rated franchise a PG movie, Mistake 2. The casting was way off, Mistake 3. The writers pissed on the source material. Lilith is too old and skinny, and kevin hart does not fit the roland role. Movie sucks, play the game for a better experience

The instant I learned Kevin Hart was playing Roland and Cate Blanchett was playing Lilith I knew this was going to be bad.

I don't deny that Borderlands has its problems as an IP, but it deserved better than this. At the very least, I wish it had better casting.

I think an animated series would have done so much more to capture the "Borderlands" universe. Especially if it were for mature viewers and could retain blood, gore, sick humor, and gun tiers

I had no idea who Randy Pitchford was until this movie came out, and from what I've seen after diving into what he's done and how he's acting now, he really does seem like a genuine a-hole who can't take criticism.

I think Eli pocketed the money from the budget to Thanksgiving. This movie is a career ender, luckily thanksgiving came out before this crap.

The scary thing is even Uwe Boll *would’ve* made a better movie than this. And that’s with him making better casting choices. At least he *would’ve* made sure the actors accurately resembled the characters they were portraying, appearance wise at the most.

They really need to start highering a small group of die hard fans and the devs themselves to come on board early for these adaptations to have some type of oversight to make recommendations to ensure integrity to the source material. It's good that they gave a game adaptation a big budget but the people making the film aren't passionate about the games and it shows.
