The Julian calendar was running 10 days BEHIND, not ahead of the solar year in the 16th century; hence the reason 10 days were expurgated: Thursday, October 4, 1582 was succeeded by Friday October 15 (in Catholic countries). For each subsequent century, the Julian calendar lagged another day behind (i.e. 11 days in the 18th century, 12 in the 19th, 13 in the 20th and 21st, etc.)
