Robert Burger was the author of "The Chess of Bobby Fischer." This game was played at the Mechanics Institute Chess Room, 57 Post Street, San Francisco, which is the oldest continuously operating chess club in the USA. Burger, who was about a 2400 player, was drinking at a Harrington's, a local bar nearby. Ed Harrington, the bartender, goaded Bob into playing and bet him $20 he could not beat Fischer. Bob, who was a published wine expert and who loved his spirits, took the bet. He was well known at the club and caused a stir when he too his board. Ed and his entourage huddled behind Bob, and after his win, Burger raised his hand and Ed paid him off. In his aforementioned book, Bob would not feature his game and it's listed in a note anonymously. By the way, Bob himself told me this story.

There’s a dude out there telling him friends he beat Fischer in under 12 moves and people are saying he’s a habitual liar

Agadmator: “whether he is on the receiving or the giving end of this miniature that is to be seen.”
Also agadmator on the title:”Fischer loses to amateur in 12 moves.”

This is just a draw and then he proceeds to show the most crazy line ever 😂

A TV talk-show asked Fischer, "Can anyone beat you?" He said, "Oh, sure, anyone can beat me. But not in a match of 20 or 30 games."

What do you mean you couldn't find a picture of Bob Burger? He has a whole cartoon series.

Bob Burger was a top US 2 move problem composer. He also composed three-movers with his friend the outstanding
RCO Matthews, winning many prizes together. A very congenial chap, he had 10 children, the last one an adopted black, and was a close friend of GM Nick Defirmian.

This game is why top players demand that when they play simultaneous games that none of the players are really that good. For example, Kasparov was playing a simultaneous and he got upset when one of the players was rated above 2000, Such players have the ability to inflict embarrassing loses on the top players in simultaneous games as happened here.

4:17 you get this position where it's equal material, obviously white is up the exchange, but the position is pretty much equal, black is up a pawn.

I have never been more confused my entire life 💀😅

there is an interesting line in the 2nd game where instead of Nf6 (not a threat but can avoid checkmate), start with 1. .. Qxg2 2. Kxg2 Ne3 3. Kg3 Bd5 4. Kh3 Bc8 5. Kh4 Be2 6. Kh5 g6 7. Kh6 Ng4 8. Kg7 Bf6 9. Qxf6 Nxf6 10. Kxf6

I think Dennis Alan just got lucky when he came up with Nf6 he probably wanted to prevent the checkmate than it probably occurred to him the Queen was trapped than again maybe he was that strong a player he realized what he had done right away Great move !! 😊thanks Agad enjoy your day

Robert (Bob) Eugene Burger was also a Trustee of the Mechanics Institute Library in SF. I preferred the less serious environment of Hardcastles (coffee shop) for 5-minute chess in Berkeley (across the bay).

*what if white plays pawn d2 to e3?*
bishop on c1 opens an attack on black's queen

Sadly Robert Burger's account was closed for fair play shortly afterwards.😉
