As someone also heavily betrayed by my body (in a wheelchair), a survivor of organized child abuse...I can wholeheartedly confirm that the kindness of strangers, nurses and anyone even loosely related to the medical or mental health field, *means everything*. It makes so many of the horrible things that I'm already used to coping with like a champ SO much easier and bearable. It can even make something that was once bad, actually a GOOD experience. The kindness doesn't take away the bad parts, but just overwhelms them with more good than bad...and *infinitely* more good than was expected.
I'm thankful for people LIKE Carmen and all the friendly and helpful faces that choose levity when my whole world is falling apart.

This story is a really good example of why I always try to be as kind and respectful as possible at work, regardless of what my mood actually is. I work in food service, so I deal with strangers all day long. With hate crimes on the rise right now, it's important to be kind more than ever before.

In all seriosuness, John, you are incredibly lucky to have such an amazing life. I'm glad you realize it, and are still on the side of those of us who a lot of people would like to see live...less-than-amazing lives.
