She did what she had to, so she could protect her and her kid from a horrible man, who just wanted Hamilton's money. She even wrote Hanilton a letter two days earlier warning him about what James would do. She's not the seductive little witch everyone thinks she is.

Not so fun fact: I was just watching the Disney version and I noticed that at the very end of the song, when Maria and James are walking out, James threw something on the ground, I think it was the money he got, and Maria flinched. Just ya’know. Fun... little....disturbing details.
