I 'stumbled' across this video while looking for info on using a wallwart to power a smart thermostat. I've been in the home improvement industry for 25 years. This video has the BEST tips and tricks for fishing wires through a wall with minimal damage. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experince.

Great tips Craig! Obviously it's hard to recreate a actual situation in someone's home. But for everyone saying about not having insulation & blah blah, it's the fishing tips & concept that he's trying to teach. 👍

Love your channel brother. If you worked from Houston, I would work for you for free just to learn from someone with your skill set.

When we do our rough in, I typically set my own blocking for the thermostat so I have backing when it’s time for trim.
The carpenter is always say they’re gonna do stuff, but little things like that get missed, so I just do it myself.
Thanks for the video.!

I saw one, that had a super magnet, that has you drag the magnet down the wall pulling a plumbob like steel weight. It looks great, and eliminates the problem of negotiating wall insulation. The thing I always fear is accidentally hitting a water pipe or power line. I had this happen to me once in Alaska while in an apartment nailing in quarter-round in the ceiling, the customer was absent. Then it became, ”wheres the water supply cut off”? Talk about jumping t(rough your butt.... My lesson learned is always know where the water supply cut off is, and service disconnect “BEFORE “ you start work and the location of the nearest fire extinguishers are....just in case. When fishing wires are a problem, remember, this is 2022. Wires are quickly becoming obsolete. I hung a Red-link thermostat and receiver, in an all concrete and steel building up four floors, and the customer insisted I install the steel thermostat lock boxes to boot. I was shocked.... these things worked great. This was about 5 years ago. Its cost less than a decent programmable would. I just wired the receiver in the cellar... this is an option in case your on a second floor and need to reach the basement, so you don’t have to fish wires through two floors, patching...

I had to do one today. It was easy. I drilled a half inch hole on the wall and half inch hole on the wall header.

Great tips, I use the chain and pull through with a small stick magnet same in the floor. Pilot bit through the carpet is all fun and games until it starts to pull.

When I drill down a wall cavity blind with a long drill bit, I put a tennis ball on the drill shaft to keep the bit away from the front and back of the cavity.

Thanks Craig. All those unanswered questions we had in HVAC school, or on the job laid out for us, thanks again. I've used a chunk of fiberglass insulation a few times to stop the "backdraft" behind the Tstats.
