I'm just a guy who replaced the remaining knob and tube circuits in my house, (most overhead lights and 2nd floor baseboard outlets) but I actually did go buy the cheap Harbor Freight, or maybe Menards, borescope. I don't think it really helped me much at all - not like using the camera on my phone did. I didn't know about the rods, and used my Home Depot fish tape for everything. I would use an extending magnet to find the tape when I knew I was close.
One trick I came up with, which I didn't see you allude to, was a Light Beacon. I found a USB rechargeable tail light which had fallen off someone's bicycle, and so when I was in the attic drilling through that top header/sill board of a wall, I would place the flashing light in the outlet or switch hole, and if I saw the light after drilling the hole, I immediately knew I was in the right spot. On the second floor, I was able to use the device holes in most cases, and far fewer guide holes, than on the first floor. I think that was the savior when I did the front porch light - there is still the first few feet of my fish tape, one of those $45 long cable-style big drill bits, and a Dewalt extension, all trapped up there above my front porch...

As a veteran electrician of 14 years, I use fish sticks about 95% of the time, especially the good quality, flexible ones.good video btw.And just like you, I avoid attics like the plague, also lol

Great idea for sending a thin rod from next to the run, up into the attic, to show where to find the top-plate and drill down through. That's a great tip. Thanks much!

You can use a 1/16'' (0.062 - $0.76/ea.) piece of steel wire rod or "music wire" (found mine from an rc hobby shop, cuz I they are used for making connections to servos on rc airplanes) it leaves a VERY VERY TINY hole that you can cover up with your finger and a tiny tub of premixed spackle. You can get all sorts of sizes such as .032, .039 or .062 from $0.55 to $0.76 each for 3 foot pieces! 0.062 is the easiest to work with and the most "durable" and pretty easy to spot. If you do it on a ceiling you don't even have to paint it if you wipe your spackle finger mark off with a damp paper towel. Best part is the rods can be bought in lengths up to 3 ft long and are SUPER CHEAP compared to drill bits. They cut a clean hole with no raised edges and you can push a huge length up through insulation so when you get in the attic there's no game of hide and seek and you can get right to work.... less time dying in the heat of the attic!!! Cheap, Easy, EFFICIENT!

As usual an awesome teaching video. Thank you. So my question is you mention an attic. What if the access you have mocked is not able to be accessed from the attic and is just a ceiling space. Can I still use this technique to fish wire across the room? Thank you bud for all you do with the teaching.

You're in Vegas? Oh hell yeah, I would want to stay out of the hot attic there also! I'm in IL, will be in Vegas in a couple weeks, going from cold to some nice warmer weather.

thank you for all your videos. they are very helpful. Have a question. how would you fish wire though a bathroom wall that got those plastic / pvc... wall paneling halfway up the wall and the rest is wall paper to the ceiling. to top it off, the breaker box is in the middle of the the bathroom wall on the wall paper. wall paper is not available. I got to pull dedicated wire from the breaker box to 2 rooms over.

I use insulation wire, or the metal wire that holds insulation up for a spotter bit.
