to prevent vehicle theft, news and police are advising owners of vehicles equipt with some proximity keys (aka smartkeys) to store keys away from the front door.

try this hack and this will disable your key fob.

Basically this trick puts the fob into the battery saving mode, which stops it from receiving and sending signals.
Depending on your model, you may be able to completely disable the smart key from your car's console settings. For maximum security always use the metal key inside the fob to lock/unlock the car, and when starting the car just hold the fob against the start button (may be different on each model, see the car manual for details).

Toyota sells keyless entry as a feature to increase customer comfort (we have to be so self indulgent that we cannot not keep track of the traditional key, put in in the ignition and turn it) and then proposes a way to ensure the security of the very same feature, that actually requires the customer to adopt many more out-of-the-routine movements that a traditional key fob would. Very smart.

This is WAY more convenient than having a mechanical key with a chip in the remote head of it. Thanks, Toyota! Love that Entune and Scout Cluster System, too and only 8.00 a month to use my remote start.

you can disable keyless entry in the menu in the media screen on the RAV4, had to do this after car was stolen but luckily recovered, now have 2 trackers and steering lock, the RAV4 is very easy to steal, have a faraday pouch but theives followed me in to car park and got the signal whilst i was locking car

It would have been nice if when I bought my 2023 Tacoma from North Park Toyota in San Antonio Texas they would have told me about this but the salesman was clueless about the truck and it’s features.

edit: tinkering with the settings showed that you can easily disable the keyless entry mode making the keyfob an old fashioned remote. Like it should be

If I disable the keyless auto start from the from the car's console, do I need to stop it on the key as well ? Furthermore, can I still continue to use the lock and unlock buttons on the key instead of the physical key ?
