Crazy Plumber breaks valve, almost causes flood in multi million dollar home!

This was a close call, I was called out for a second story toilet “not working” by one of my air BNB customers, this wound up being a clogged toilet, after I failed with my auger i decided it was time to pull it, I used my ridgid wet/dry vac to suck the water out and removed the toilet, I always set the toilet on a foam cushion to prevent any damage to the flooring, if you follow my channel and watch my videos you’ve probably noticed that before. Once I had the toilet removed I grabbed my k9-204 and threw on a 4” knocker with a penetrating head, then I got to unclogging the drain, once the water all dropped out and I heard it dump into the main I decided to fill up a couple five gallon buckets, unless the customer has a bath tub I usually just fill the buckets up with the toilet supply line, well after I filled one bucket and dumped it down I was filling another bucket to dump it and when I went to shut the anglestops off it would not shut off obviously this type situation sucks and it’s rare and I do consider it a #PlumbingFail I’m glad my years in service have taught me to think on my feet so I used my pair of 12” channellocks gripped the hose and directed it down to the drain line, this hose was older and it was really stiff with a bend in the perfect spot for the channellocks to hold it and direct it down the drain line, I sat for a moment to be sure it was ok and when I was satisfied that it would hold I bolted down stairs to shut the water off!

Just so we are all on the same page and anybody in the trades should know this, the value of a home is not solely determined by what the interior of the home looks like, the value of a home specially homes in the million dollar range is typically based off the location and size of the home. Nobody cares what base board or flooring you used, when people buy homes that expensive they have it all redone the way they want it done anyways oh and just because you own a million dollar home doesn’t mean you knew to hire the right contractors

My dad has been a plumber for over 40 years. He always taught me that those stem valves always fail lol. The best approach is to turn those valves all the way off and flush the toilet. If the tank still fills up, then you know you have to turn off the main water supply 😎

I'm a 23 year service plumber. I think all the plumbers that are on here can give 20 things that should have happened before he found himself in this position. The reality is stuff happens. This guy handled himself like a pro and found a solution didn't panic and, prevented a flood. Good job.

That's why I recommend 1/4 turn angle valves not the multiturn

I feel your pain! Been doing service work for 30 years…. My advice: always find main valve before touching anything!

Been in this situation a few times working in apartment maintenance. Learned real quick to just close the main shutoff when working on various supply valves.

Never never never trust a stem valve. Dont even try to turn them.

Customer: it should only take you 5 minutes

You can fold the hose over and pinch it closed with a pair of vice grips to stop the water in emergency’s.

Just have to say I love plumbing. It's literally the coolest job ever.

I pretty much count on replacing the valve every time I work on a toilet.

Reminds me of my time as an electrical apprentice, me and my mentor were working and we just hear loud yells, we think nothing of it until a loud bang and water floods from the balcony (like 100 gallons) into the giant entrance we were working on. The poor day laborer was all alone and managed to cut the wrong pipe and couldn't stop it. Only the GC knew where the shut off was as he wouldn't answer his phone

Been there, i had a c-clamp in my truck it reduced it to a drip. 1/4 turn's rule unless added to older iron pipe. Great vid!🤙

You did an excellent job, coming up with a solution on the fly. I’ve been doing this a bit longer than you and my suggestion is always always always have a pair of vise grips with you. 😃
