Why Is This Fish Not Extinct? | Ocean Sunfish

It looks like a prehistoric shark that lost a tail in an epic battle and might seem to be the world's weirdest and most defenseless fish in the world. It can barely swim and has been described as a giant drifting all-you-can-eat buffet for predators. So, why is this fish not extinct yet?

This fish looks exactly like something a 3 year old would draw

Sunfish were prevalent at the Monterey Bay Aquarium upon our first visit. Only a handful were left a few years later. We were told they’re not the most intelligent creatures and that they literally forget to eat.

Real definition of: "Be useless so others cannot use you."

Suggest you do some fact checking before reading an AI generated script. They can swim fast enough to jump out of the water and jellyfish only make up around 15% of their diet. 2 minutes on Google would have told you this and so much more

Fun fact. In norwegian it's called Månefisk (Moonfish).

The largest on record was seen last year in Azores islands, Portugal. It had a weight of 2744kg!

The most underappreciated fish. I'm sure more people would like to hook one than marvel at its magnificence. Love the Mola Mola.

Is kinda funny, Sunfish in spanish is called "Pez luna" wich translates as "Moonfish"

Fisherman, who have seen many Mola Mola, tell me they have never seen these fish attacked by predators. They say the fish emit an oily stinking residue that dissuade fish from eating them.

Too useless to take care for itself.
Too useless to hunt.
Somehow, that feels relatable.

#1 Why did the narrator say the sunfish can barely swim? That's far from fact. It simply swims differently from most fish.
#2 It is not immobile. The large dorsal and anal fins are perfect for propelling its stiff body forward.

google: Ocean sunfish don't have scales. Instead, they have a thick, rubbery skin that is covered in mucus. ... your video is very bad and approximative on about everything it could have to offer, why bother doing such small and botched video ? doesn't even seems to interests you....

I love sunfish, they're the goofiest animals to ever live.

It can do something most bony fish can’t do. It doesn’t have a swim bladder and it’s density is exactly as sea water allowing multiple deep dives a day and basks to regain heat.

The Sunfish isn't as slow as most believe, but also not as fast as some are claiming. From what I've researched, they are capable of shorts bursts of acceleration/speed, but are not built to sustain that speed. And while they can swim fast enough to jump out of water, they're not considered a fast fish. They are slow af compared to a Marlin or Mako or Tuna, etc. But those who say they are just drifters are wrong. They do drift a lot, to conserve energy, but they do not rely on drifting to survive.

Yeah, because being poisonous is not a defensive mechanism
