Ubunte discontinued its 32-bit support last month. So if you're running a pentium4 or something older, you might revert to Debian etc. Though I'm still getting kernel updates on Bionic 18.04, those will likely subside shortly. Most of my systems are 64-bit now. My music editing and jukebox systems are pentium4 and pentium3. They sill work, so I keep them running off-network.

I'm running Puppy Linux on an Acer Aspire One (year 2010 model, 32-bit, 1GHz CPU, 2GB RAM). Works pretty well as long as I keep the browser updated. Some websites are slow, but offline software runs smoothly.

Old is relative. Best thing things for an old acquisition is an SSD, then more RAM, then LMDE 5 which is still available in 32-bit should you need e.g. Lenovo T-62, bought dirt cheap, loaded with LMDE 32-bit and passed to a friend. His comment was "I can't believe how easy this is to use!" That just makes my day, grin. Did the same upgrades for my old Lenovo T-500, except 64-bit. Real happy with that I am, having installed Caliber and the Baen Free Library set. Keep smiling, we're brothers in habits we are.

I have quite a lot of experience installing Linux on old computers. Sometimes it works really well and you can use your computer for many things with much more comfort. Unfortunately, sometimes not. It happens that Linux consumes less resources, but in reality it does not work faster because of a crappy video driver or something. But with a little creativity, you can always come up with something interesting.

I recommend everyone to test drive a bunch of them in a VM or as a live CD.
I personally prefer Linux lite over Zorin. It just a better feel for me.
It's great to have all the options to pick what we like. 😊

This was the best advice regarding computers ive had in a while. My old laptop (Acer Aspire e5-751g from 2014) runs Zorin Lite 16 very smooth. Using a HDMI cable, I finally have a 'smart tv' without having to un- and replug my work laptop

I had been waiting for quite some time for you to talk about Zorin Os. Thank you!

I feel like the hardware would be a bit *too* slow for my use, but it would be PERFECT for a loved one as a data backup. Put something like OMV/Casa to run headless, put it in a corner next to the router and voila. It can backup my mum's photos and important files. Add a tunnel to maintain remotely.

But if you have an even older machine, I'd recommend Q4OS. It's packaged with bare naked Debian, and Trinity desktop, previously known as KDE 3. It "just works", as the cool kids would say

I use zorin on a older machine with nvidia gpu. it is definitely the preferred Linux distro for me.

when i used zorin it introduced a 2 year old bug that everyone knew about because it was in ubuntu but they introduced anyway and it essentially made every app timeout for like a minute before opening, and because they have a horribly slow release cycle I was stuck with it lmao. that's the problem with these ubuntu based distros that only have a couple of custom themes and backgrounds.

I've never used Belana etcher but I know people recommend it. For anybody interested - the Fedora media writer is really good and it will even write Fedora to a USB, whilst being downloaded and you can tell it to either save the download or delete it when it is finished.

I use a 12 year old notebook with an i7. The SSD upgrade was the most important thing. Now I've ordered 16GB of RAM (out of 8)...I cleaned it and replaced the thermal paste with a non-electrically conductive one and applied a good amount of it to the entire CPU area instead of just the little silver chip (so that entire heatsink is square). the one that comes next is filled). About 7 - 10 degrees Celsius less at 100% heavy load. Win11 runs well enough. I completely uninstalled widgets... for browsing and managing things that are really good enough.

I've Grown very attached to Mint since the beginning, but I always download the newest Xorin when a new release comes out.
Occasionally I'll give it a shot on a spare system in the pile, but I usually revert to Mint or Lubuntu

I have a 16 year old Asus Eee 1000H happily running Antix which is a Linux distro for old computers. I run the 32-bit version with 2Gb of RAM and a 1Tb SATA SSD hard drive. It does everything except streaming video and youtube. Plays videos from the hard drive, it's great for reading, office work, listening to music, etc, etc. Just not for streaming.
