The death toll in Kerala's Wayanad continues to rise as rescue operations enter the sixth day. Over 360 people have died in one of the deadliest landslides in the nation. Thousands have been rescued and are in relief camps. About 1,300 rescuers are on site, facing challenges from huge boulders and logs. A drone-based detection system from Delhi is aiding in the search. As per official records, 206 people are still missing from Mundakkai and Chooralmala and the death toll is said to have crossed 240. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggests the death toll to be above 360.

While the natural calamity is also being cited for ignoring the pre-warning of environmentalists with negligence and corruption of the state government in rampant norms violation, it has been seen by a section as a curse of a heinous crime of some miscreants in Malappuram who on 27th May 2020 fed an pregnant elephant with cracker filled pineapple and set it ablaze. The elephant died in utter agony standing on Velliyar river with damaged jaws. The entire Malappuram now stands perished possibly with miscreants as well.
