The rock pick is made from regular old steel. Lava doesn’t get hot enough to melt steel and it’s only in contact with the molten rock for a few seconds. It’s why the guy can use the shovel and not have it melt.

They start with very high platform shoes made in the 1970's and the trick is to get the sample and get off the lava field before you run out of sole.

I did that as a tourist in Hawaii in 1992. We were allowed to walk on the previous day’s flow. I brought with me a mop bucket which I filled with water and black sand, a mop handle and bbq tongs. I found a rift in the lava where I could get to the red lava, stuck in the mop handle, brought out blobs of lava and dropped them on the ground, then used the tongs to drop them in the bucket of water. I still have those rocks to this day. At that moment, those were the newest rocks on the face of the Earth.
