Drones Sacrificed for Spectacular Volcano Video | National Geographic

Video technology and science converge on an active volcano in Vanuatu, where explorer Sam Cossman operated camera-mounted drones to capture high-definition images of the spectacular yet dangerous Marum Crater. Cossman and his team piloted the drones over the 7.5-mile-wide (12-kilometer) caldera while confronting toxic gases and boiling lava. Although two drones succumbed to the harsh environment, the team was able to bring back video and photos that will help scientists learn more about the volcano and the life around it.

Fascinating, but when you advertise "DRONES SACRIFICED" I expect to see the sacrificial video of the drones falling into the lava. Please provide that.

We want the sacrificial footage. Misleading title!

I was here to see drone suicide.
A bit disappointed.

Extremophile microbes are definitely an underrated lifeform. Imagine being able to live inside a volcano. Very cool footage!

This video should be titled "Drone films people standing near a volcano".

"you have every force down there trying to kill you"
The volcano is just being a volcano, nobody is trying to kill you.

My expectation - a video of drones instantly melting... I didn't get that. And yet, I think the video is wonderful.

Anyone else disappointed that we didn’t get to see the drones falling to their demise or drone footage of the lava lake REALLY close up?

Was expecting to see drones fly extremely close to the lava, and then fall in. Dissapointed, but still really awesome!

Fantastic, well done but i would have liked to have seen the crashing drones especially into the lava.

He knew, deep in his heart, that the cameraman never dies. 🔥

I can't believe they're going to the edge of that thing and standing there. They could have a rock slide at any time.

I want to see footage from the drones that fell into the lava up to the moment they stopped transmitting

We were really, really, disappointed with this. Much like Fozzibab we wanted to see the drones actually die. You should make sure that you don't falsely advertise drone death, and then not follow through with it. Thanks x

Isn't there a chance that this volcano could erupt while they're there?

I wish i could throw a lil stone to the crater

Less talky, more showy. They all convey the same info in every volcano show ever made.
I'd love to just sit there & watch volcanos bubbling away with no other background noise.
