121GW Autoranging Speed

Because some people still think the 121GW autoranging speed is too slow.
A comparison test.

I doubt anyone would have a problem with 3 seconds auto range in general use. I suspect people are giving you a bit of a hard time because you have been pretty brutal in your reviews of other meters/equipment.

Paint on white racing stripes to make it go faster. It works on cars.

Sure you can find a few meters with faster update speeds, but which of those has low burden voltage on the current range, which of those will light a 12 volt LED, which of those will measure current and voltage combined, and does logging and Bluetooth

It's not very fast. Don't bother test this. The key performance is the dc accuracy, resistance accuracy, current accuracy.

For me the meter is performing well Dave. I don't mind the "slow" speed, I think it's ok. What I wanted, and the meter delivered, is accuracy and data logging. I think those are the selling points.

I mean if you're used to the BM235... it does seem slow!

Great comparison. Being of a certain age I think autoranging is bloody marvellous compared to all that dial clicking we used to have to do. Even if a meter takes over 5 seconds the convenience far outweights a teeny bit of time. No matter what you give them some people will just complain about it. All anyone should care about in a meter is accuracy and reliability of readings.

Measured the 87 at around one second. Wonder why some chipsets are considerably slower than others.. more ranges but still the difference is huge, like two or three times. The 121GW is a great little meter! It is unfair to compare the resources of huge corporations to the ones available to Dave, and still the Keysight is slower hehe. Well done Dave, keep the improvements coming!

Hi Dave, do you know there is a gigadevice microcontroller called gd32f330 on lcsc.com, its a clone of stm32f330, tssop20 package. i dont know wether its pin compatible with the stm32f070 in the usupply but its a cortex m4 series microcontroller and has 128kb flash, maybe it can replace the 070 one.

Hi Dave, great content. My Fluke 12 (from the 80's) beats all those you were using, however as you may know, it has no current range! I have become to trust it though and apart from the buttons which have worn out it has never let me down. I fixed the 4 buttons with some tact type switches and it works well. Good luck...

I have both the 121GW and the BM325 which are used daily without thought of a 2 second auto-range delta.
I use my multimeters, I don't benchmark them.

Why is there no new information of the 121GW? Are most problems fixed, are there still any? How is the latest firmware like? Did they manage to get the noise down?

I would still call that slow, it's much better than it used to be, and it's usable, but a pain for certain uses.
For quick measurements outside of the bench I still use my old BK 2709B which I purchased after seeing your round up, because it autoranges pretty fast.

I just figured out why it's called the 121GW, guess I'm a bit slow!

That´s why meters should have manual range select too

I would have thought that someone who is relentless and unfiltered in expressing their opinion on other branded test equipment would have slightly thicker skin when the same is done to their products. I own a 121GW and I have never been bothered by the auto range speed, but it is pretty slow.

I think people are being harsh because you are towards other products. And well, don't piss in the wind and expect to not get covered. Or something like that

It's a good multimeter, supporting a great man. Why does it matter if it takes 3 seconds? He's not marketing it for people who check resistors all day long. It's a good product from a good man for us nerds.

Meter works very well for me, Dave. The fastest meter, which isn't even handheld, that I have access to is a Keithley that costs 3.5K. Horses for courses.

Have you marked it as directed for kids?

When I was growing up, even if you did an absolutely perfect job of something, nothing was said. Any imperfection however was commented on. As far as I'm concerned, if they're clutching at things like settling time on auto range to gripe about, you've won.
Far as I can see (have yet to buy one) the specs of the 121GW for the price, far out weight an extra second on ranging.
