Regarding the AH/mail/grouping thing: the key is to not worry about how others are playing. This applies to all aspects of life. You can choose how you approach the challenge and what is fun for you. Is solo-self found fun for you? Do it. Is twinking your character up through the whole process and playing in groups fun for you? Do it. It’s a multiplayer game, but how you approach the challenge remains individual. Blizz’s ‘barebones’ version of HC leaves the choice to the individual on how they want to play. Make your own fun.

One aspect I've noticed for my personal playtime on HC, is that I'm now more concerned with the goings on of the other players around me in the world. I'm checking them for buffs, throwing heals to strangers in a fight, or stepping in and burning down a grey-tagged mob just to help. I haven't joined any groups for dungeons though..

I like that the game isn't just hyperfocused on max level content.

Completely the opposite of how people play WoW normally and it's refreshing.

Honestly playing hardcore classic has been like playing for the first time all over again. Ive never been a fan of perma-death modes, but Ive been having so much fun with it. I group up with some friends while also having some solo run characters.

Seeing the old leveling zones be absolutely packed with other players just feels amazing. The world feels alive again.

Classic hardcore is fun, and a very cool game mode. What is not cool is the constant threat of a disconnect wiping potentially hundreds of hours of progress with absolutely no appeals. Making hardcore a 5/10.

AH and mailing lets you support yourself and your guildies. It also creates a sort of merchant caste of characters who don’t necessarily get very high character level but cap out their professions and play that way. Honestly it’s been really interesting to see how HC makes professions not only relevant but necessary, because the demand for good gear outpaces how many greens the server pop finds in the world. Every item, particularly level 1-20 items, has greater value both in the market and for gameplay.

Theres no grrater feeling in an mmo than saving a strangers life and potentially dozens of hours or more of their progress, or being saved in the same way. You make friends you wanna get to 60 together wirh that way.

I like that it is 'bare bones' version on the official HC. You can still do what you want after that. You can still use an addon or whatever. Play your own way.

I dinged 60 with my Pala yesterday after a four or five hour grind in Western Plaguelands, right next to Uther's tomb.

One of the best gaming experiences I've done.

As someone that last played retail in WoD running Heroic raids... Flash forward to today when I pugged RFC with randoms as a baby healer and to have people communicating and even marking the lowest level dungeon in game and feeling accomplished when we finished. It's made everything matter and the community feel like it has a mutual goal.

I didn’t play pre-hardcore cause it didn’t have grouping, auction house, etc. it gives it the feel of a rogue-like. If you made it to 50+ and saved up a stash, you can use that stuff you earned to make your new character powerful on the next run.

I love your idea, as an altoholic myself, of leveling each character 5 levels at a time starting at 10 and seeing the differences or seeing if you can learn from mistakes made by a different class to get the others further. 😁

I was opposed to the AH at first and less so grouping, but after several deaths I have to say I think that they have maybe recaptured some of that lightning in a bottle and revived the community aspect of the game thanks to grouping. There was a great community with unofficial but the official has opened that to a much wider audience. As far as the AH goes, I think it's fine. Makes leveling easier sure but it also bolsters the higher level community. At the end of the day, over confidence and lack of awareness seem to account for most deaths, gear helps but not forever.

The best way forward for WoW HC is just Blizz ripping the band aid off and starting the Classic+ - which would [should] result in HC servers receiving these new patches as well. And SSF 1-59 mode as well, where at 60, you can then group and trade normally. For some added challenge. That's what I would love the most from WoW.

While it is obviously different from SSF, having mail and a bank alt is probably what helps with retention and people being prepared to try again. Knowing that they can at least start again with some bags and a few gold, makes it a little less daunting when it comes to re-rolling. Also gives players a sense that everything up until that point was not a complete waste of time. Some will say this is more of a softcore approach instead of hardcore, but I think Blizzard actually did this right. You can always limit your own character to your own guidelines or challenge.

Grouping/Mail/AH is fine. The Hardcore economy has been interesting to watch. The finality of a character's death no matter your starting advantages balances out and people who are given gear to give them a leg up are rewarded for having gone through the grind before like real-life heirlooms (not discounting people who pay for it - that's someone else's dumb choice to waste their money) I also think that grouping so you don't have to compete for mobs or have to go into dangerous areas alone helps the social aspect of the game. The easiest way of forgoing these things if you don't like them is to avoid them rather than enforce your gameplay choices on others.

For me, hardcore classic has completely reinvigorated the game. All zones are populated, people talk and cooperate, economy works etc. All because people are leveling all the time as they die constantly, which also means there's so much work on the line at all times. Last night I did Scarlet Monastery and it was exhilarating. It's the best version of WoW I've played since Vanilla. And no, the AH, grouping or trading is part of the game. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with it. It's an MMO, not a single player game. Trading and grouping make the community what it is.
