She had an over-reliance on alcohol! Professor Trelawney was often full of hot air and self-importance, but she was at least ninety per cent a fraud. She was conscious of her low status on the staff, who were almost all more talented than she was, so Trelawney spent most of her time apart from her colleagues, up in her stuffy and chaotic tower office. This led to her drinking too much.

Actually her drinking began after Umbridge sacked her and Dumbledore brought a centaur in as her replacement. Nowhere in any of the books did she imbibe in alcohol preceding these events.

Not necessarily a fraud tho. Prediction is a prediction, if all of her predictions come true, it means she is a God that is able to control everything. Moreover, at least her major prophecy comes true.

There is a theory that the reason why Trelawney gets drunk on sherry was due to her fear of losing control whenever she would predict the future. Using alcohol to dull her abilities so she would not predict all the time. As a result though, her predictions when drunk though accurate were often mis-interpreted. For example, she would predict Harry deaths, however this does not necessairly mean a physical death. Death can represent new beginnings, a rebirth, losing something to begin anew. When looking at this interpretation, she was 100% accurate.
She also had to face a lot of struggles with peoples perception of her gift. McGonagal for example constant sceptism and loathing for the art and people like Hermiones closed mindness would result in Trelawney having confidence issues. Isolating her self from critics also did not help her stay grounded into reality.
She is a true and gifted seer, I would love to see a back story of Trewalney and how she got to the state she currently is in.
