Excellent analysis. I noticed that extended arm too. 👍 He holds the arm position slightly longer than other swimmers which allows him to glide further.

Also, if you watch videos from above the water, it almost seems like the splash from his kick goes backwards more than other swimmers. The other swimmers splash seems to go out more in all directions, implying he had incredible ankle flexion.

So it’s the kick that differentiates him from the rest. On that basis is he kicking faster or is he opening his legs a bit wider. I can count the number of hand strokes made by each swimmer. Even in a crazy race like 50m freestyle where people use shorter straighter and more frequent strokes I can count strokes but I cannot tell what they are doing with their feet. I understand that there are many cameras under water but they seem to be at either ends and do not follow the swimmer (s) the whole 50 meters so that I compare swimmers from one lane to the other. Hence we have to judge by the amount of splashes the feet make. Feet that breaking the surface make more splashes than those that are a little below. Also the feet that are below make the head goes higher ? ! (all else being equal). Would be grateful to hear other opinions.
