In the old days when musicians played ensemble a lot, everybody listened to the whole and inserted their contribution. Later, multitrack recording had each musician play a single part into the tape for later assembly into a whole, but the parts were composed ensemble. With a daw you're typically layering from nothing, which means the first track you lay down is by a performer (you) that isn't listening to, and has never heard, the other players.

I needed this today. I always think "of course, that's the answer" but then when I'm working I don't know why, but I end up filling my songs with too much.
At the last stage I'm always taking out a lot of stuff so I waste a lot of time adding and taking ...

Guilty as charged! I tend to “over write” then when mixing start taking elements out for clarity.

By not recording any music, I make the best music of all.

There's a couple of Youtube channels I follow where the guy will just add, add, add...and when I think its too much, he'll add some more. I feel like that's the opposite approach I want to take with music. I'm a visual artist and I always find my best work comes when I take a subtractive approach.

An entire album for me… I stopped listening and started believing that more is always more when so often it is just more of a mess and less of what is best😳🙄🤣

Hey Jameson, these shorts are great! I wonder if it's possible to put the link to the full videos they're excerpted from in the comments?

It may be a quirk of my phone, but for whatever reason, the links in the descriptions are not clickable for me.
