Gotham Knights Review: 2 Years Later (No Spoilers) 2024

With Batman dead, it's up to Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Red Hood to finish what he started and protect Gotham. Despite coming in with low expectations, Gotham Knights manages to equally impress and disappoint me. In this review, I'll attempt to piece together why. For me, Gotham Knights is basically the gaming equivalent of The Medium Place, it checks all the boxes but everything is only about 50-70% as good as I want it to be. To be honest, playing it in 2024, I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would, but then again my expectation wasn't very high to begin with and every so often something would happen to remind me of its mediocrity.

Also, this is a bit random but do the Gotham Knights feel like the TMNT to anyone else or is it just me? It was bugging me why Red Hood's animation seems so heavy, but then I remembered the last few TMNT redesigns and realized they just made the angry guy bigger and heavier like with Raph.

As a fan of this game I want to thank you for being fair to it rather than a lot of folks who in the past were looking at the game through Arkham Series nostalgia goggles despite being told over and over that is wasn't related to the Arkham series in any way (though some folks probably would prefer it be after suicide squad I imagine.). It is nice to see someone objectively view the game and even as a fan of it I admit there are things that could have been better but overall it's like you said a good game. Despite how short its story can be I love the connection between the Knights in the character backstory moments I feel if they gave a good writer to flesh it out even more they could probably do a comic universe of the Gotham Knights world to show us a world where no one simply takes up Batman's cowl and continues as the dark knight but rather honor his legacy through their actions to keep Gotham safe.

I’m a big fan of the Arkham series. My only issues with this game are:

Movement is stiff (there’s no dedicated jump button, your character walks around like a sims)

Traversal needs more work (suggestions: turbo boost button for bike (R1) and boost for air travel)

Ability to retry missions instead of having to travel across the map to the beginning if you fail.

Ability to switch characters after leaving the belfry and also being able to run into the other heroes solving crimes randomly. Batman is dead the supervillains are supposed to be wreaking havoc, Gotham should look overtaken at least towards the end of the game like in the mister freeze missions. Like how NY looked when Sandman was attacking in Spiderman.

Combat could use some tweaking (in my opinions the enemies are perfect they act randomly and don’t wait for each other while attacking, but why is there not a counter button like in spiderman or the other Batman games).

World needs more activities (big empty space there should have been collectibles or side missions or mysteries involving memorabilia).

Saving (why is there no manual saving like 5 slots would be good)

Story progression is all over the place and when you play like me you do the side missions first then the main missions and it just so happens the enemies in missions don’t upgrade as you do so if you hold off on doing the villain side missions until you’ve fully upgraded you can run right through the enemies with no trouble.

Gotham Knights has a good CO-OP feature. Honestly, I only play this game in Co-op mode. It makes it so fun playing 2 player in story mode... and of course it is fun to jump into a quick match with 4 players in Heroic Assault . I find so many new players of this game there. I recommend co-op mode.

I actually really liked this. I may be biased since this is like the only batgirl game, and she's my favourite from the Bat family. Other than Batman of course. You actually had a lot of really good criticism, and you actually complemented the game for what it did well. From most reviews I've seen, people were just mad about the game not being 30 fps, or not being as good as Arkham. They would make TikToks showing Red hoods slow and clunky movement and try to make it look like the combat was like that overall. The game is a lot better than the new suicide squad game (personal opinion). There were a lot of people who just jumped on the hate without even playing the game or watching gameplay. Again great review 👍👍

i just tried it and have to say the story pacing is horrendous, having to do the generic "go to baddies location, beat them up" x5 times to progress the story was ridiculous. a shame because it really looks like a great game, not to mention batgirl fine AF!

Just picked this up cheap and am actually enjoying it on the Steam Deck. 45 fps surprisingly makes this a good on the go game.

Even with a fair and balanced take I can't seem to get myself to buy this game and it's been dirt cheap for years (less than half the price) at the local game store not surprising given it's reception.

This is going to be long. But oh yes, I'm sure they would've eaten alive. Yeah, from the whopping 30 fps to the 10 year old awful lighting that makes you constently feel like you're in a insane asylum. To the cookie cutter npc's. "The ps4 and Xbox 1 couldn't play this." Dude, my 360 could have played this. Why I had to buy this on the ps5 I'll have no ideal. The story is recent batman. So think movies like Son of batman or batman or batman vs. Robin or the new teen titans movie. So if you dont know about court of owls or penguin covering as a "good citizen" and running for mayor, then you might be confused pretty quickly. The positive there is there is no Daimyan if you don't know what boruto is to Naruto. daiyman is to batman. The conversations and dillimas that supposedly brings them together seem pointless. You'll go through this whole moral debate about an underaged Robin going into penguins bar to fight penguin. Then, the next scene, Robin will go to do just that, and no one will say anything else about it. They try so hard to make them seem cool, but they just don't. Red hood of all people is more whiney and emotional than the actual teenager. When Robin is cooler then red hood then there's a problem. I've never seen a reviewer mention this. I guess they don't want to he canceled, but it gets strongly political out of nowhere. I don't care what someone's politics are, but keep it out of my games. There's a whole email about rainbow capes, which sure why not. But the two who don't wear capes chime in and go yeah were for what wearing bandanas? What are you going to paint your suit? You end up relating more to Robin than any of them because the whole time, he seems just as confused by their behavior as we are. The people who should not have stealth as a specialy do and the people who should don't. If your costume features bright red, you should not be running around in the shadows. Both Robin and Red Hood have stealth builds. There's a little with night wing, but it's not great, and he's the one with the actual dark outfit. But when I think stealth, i don't think bright red. Colors, two pistols, and a bowstaff. They put your gadgets like how you would play an online game, but half the time, they seem mystical. You have people around the city that you're supposed to turn in missions, too. Which half the time you didn't even know you completed their missions. The board is there for no reason. You could easily start those missions in your menu. Don't get me wrong, there are good moments that you'll enjoy. Nightingale threatened to go dark knight on everyone cause someone took his sandwich to hallarious. But a negative they try to push their relationship and their growth together. Which final fantasy 15 shows the right way to do that, but this was just toxic most of the time. Two of them will get in a fight right after a scene where their best friends and everyone there will run down the two fighting and go straight into detective mode. There's no conversation there's no cooling down after if goes from I can't stand you to your my BFF forever.its just odd.

Yeah I played all characters and played all the way through I pre-ordered it bought into the hype and it just wasn't very good. This game could have been so much better if it was given to different developers
