Agreed about placing the hand in front of the op rod handle to impede forward movement during reloads. I was simply trying to demonstrate that the action can't close with downward pressure.

I first handled an M-1 back in 1958 in Jr ROTC (high school). It was called an "M-1" thumb by everyone in the military I encountered up to 1965. When I went on active duty, the M-1 had been phased out.

For those of you that don't know, this is in reference to what happens a lot when inexperienced individuals reload the M1 Garand (a gun used in the military). The bolt moves forward and loads another round into the chamber, and it can often catch your finger as well if you load it improperly or if you are not fast enough.

From those who actively served with these as their service weapon;

When you press it in, keep the blade of your hand firmly against the charging handle, and push down with your thumb. Whether or not it releases won't matter if it can't move anyway.
Great advice tho, but always better to use the safer, reliable method than to keep trying to improve the risky way that can pinch so often it gets a nickname
