In this video, we’re going to talk about lactose intolerance. Many have this problem and don’t even know they have it. So, what is lactose intolerance, and what should you do?

Lactose intolerance is a situation where you can’t break down lactose. Lactose is a form of sugar in many dairy products.

Some dairy products contain no lactose—always check to see if there’s a label that says “lactose-free” if you think you might be lactose intolerant.

The symptoms of lactose intolerance include:
• Gas
• Bloating
• Inflammation
• Pain
• Rumbling

These symptoms can happen right after you consume dairy, or they can happen several minutes to an hour later.

Some people with an allergy to milk or dairy can experience similar symptoms to lactose intolerance. However, these are two different things. A milk allergy is an immune reaction to the protein in dairy called casein.

Those with a dairy allergy may experience:
• Vomiting
• Hives
• Serious inflammation
• Wheezing

If you consume lactose-free products but still have a reaction to dairy, you may have an allergy instead of an intolerance to lactose. Talk to your doctor about testing for both of these situations.

What causes someone to become lactose intolerant? Lactose intolerance can be caused by:
1. Damage to your intestinal lining
2. Loss of enzymes to break down lactose
3. Loss of immune system
4. Quality of dairy products

The best remedies for lactose intolerance are:
• Probiotics (Bifidobacterium longum)
• Consume aged cheese, like cheddar and swiss
• Avoid processed cheese, milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese (all high in lactose)

My parents were forcing me to drink milk every morning for years before going to school forcefully thinking it was good for me despite me telling them that I get so much pain from it but they wouldn't listen. When I grew older, I stopped drinking milk completely. Absolutely hate it.

So simple and easy to understand. I love drinking milk but I’m always in so much pain when bloated. Thank you for the education, now I know what to look out for.

Doing keto has helped me identify this, finally. Because my stomach is empty more often, I made a cup of cocoa with milk and cream on an empty stomach and had a bad reaction (at least it didn't take me out of ketosis, as I couldn't digest the sugars!). Today I have bought a good probiotic and some lactase (I don't want to waste all that cheese and cream I have stocked up on!). After I have used up my stores, I will go completely dairy free for at least a month. Then I will test things a bit. I'm looking forward to being symptom free, although I suspect it is not the only thing going on with my digestive system.

Hi Dr. Berg. You have talked about Fructose and Sucrose and their ill effects. Should I also worry about the lactose sugar in milk if I'm trying to avoid a fatty liver and other ill effects of sugar?

Thank you for such wonderful information. I finally did the quiz. I stalled for a few weeks but finally down 30lbs. I can't thank you enough. Love the adrenal support formula.

For me lactose intolerance was simply an allergic reaction to pasteurized milk. I can drink all the raw milk I want with no reaction at all. However when I drink pasteurized milk - even as little as a half cup, I get the gas, bloating & rumbling.

Thanks for the info Doc! I have the symptoms of lactose intolerance but still I think it’s best to get a hydrogen breathe test, for their could be other conditions with similar symptoms.

THE REAL MYSTERY FOR ME IS WHY CAN I CONSUME RAW MILK AND BUTTER AND NOT HAVE THE SAME SYMPTOMS THAT I HAVE WITH PROCESSED DAIRY PRODUCTS?

I've just figured out I was lactose intolerant and never knew at all until now. I ate ice cream and experienced bloating, gas, pain, and rumbling. I asked my doctor what it was and she said it's most likely lactose intolerance. So I came here, and that's what it is!

That pain and runbling is what I have. I was diagnosed with irritable bowel many years ago but it's been suppressed with Endep but now I think I might try some lactose free milk. After all, maybe the doctor made a mistake. Thanks for your videos, they are very informative. :)

Is there a medical test for lactose intolerance? Do all doctors know about this test? I have never heard of this test.
