Despite no longer being even in the top 5 tallest buildings in NYC, the Empire State Building remains iconic.

For someone visiting NYC for the first time, the Empire State Building is just one of those that makes your jaw drop. Seeing it in person after seeing in tv, movies, book covers, magazines, and ads your whole life, to then see it piercing the sky in front of you, is an INCREDIBLE experience

I worked on the 69th floor of the Empire State Building from the late 80's to early 90's. We had north and west exposures. At that time the building had large double hung windows that could be easily lifted open, just like at home. Twice a year the window washers would come to the office, fling open the windows and climb out, hooking their harnesses to the window frame. We had advance notice that the windows were going to be cleaned and so cleared the area near the windows so that our work material wouldn't be sucked out. I saw Katherine Hepburn in the elevator lobby once and had an elevator ride alone with Bernadette Peters. It took a minute and a half to get from the ground floor to the 69th floor with no stops. The lobby is an Art Deco masterpiece filled with banks and banks of elevators.

There is no other Art Deco structure as iconic and beautiful as the Empire State Building

As a kid I grew up in awe of the Empire State Building and am sure it influenced my decision to become a structural engineer. Every time we went to the city I begged my parents t go there. As a young adult I was fortunate to serve my apprenticeship (EIT) with Skidmore Owens and Merrill assigned to Fazlur Kahn during the design and construction of Sears Tower. Yes, Sears is taller but it just does not have the mass or presence of the Empire State Building. Something about all that Art Deco and the grandiose designs of the period - It rocks.

The Empire State Building has to be the most iconic skyscraper of them all. My favorite skyscraper for sure along with the Chrysler building. Art Deco style isn't around in most cities which is why i think New York is better than Chicago.

To me this building is THE skyscraper. Even though it's height has been surpassed, even in it's own city by 5 or 6 others, it still has a commanding presence in the city's skyline.
