The top of the building was originally intended to serve as an airship mooring to its mast. This was only attempted once in 1931 and lasted only 3 minutes. Without a second line to secure the aft end of an airship, none could safely make the attempt.

After 9/11, WCBS was the only TV station with a backup transmitter at ESB, so it was able to get back on the air rather quickly. WNBC and WABC, along with WNYC radio and others, had to wait until they could get equipment placed at the Armstrong tower across the Hudson in Alpine, NJ.

In 1984 I got to go up in there. I was standing on the main observation deck with a young couple. We were chatting with a building maintenance worker. After a bit he said he had to go up there to do something. It was a low tourist day and almost empty. He asked if we'd like to see up there. So we went. It was pretty rough up there but a heck of a view!

Love the ESB, those drone shots of the mast are superb! Went up to the main observation deck in 1982 or thereabouts, & I had a VHS camcorder that would shut down as soon as I started filming… someone said it was the strong RF emanating from the mast, so I only got stills that visit!

It would be nice if you show the interior.

The 103rd floor from what I read somewhere is accessed on the All Access Tour that costs $500.

I would have loved to see these. I could never have built them, though.

Um…the building pictured at the 3:30 mark is the Chrysler Building, not the ESB.

Great video! Very informative. The last shot you had was actually of the Chrysler Building though

The last shot was the Chrysler building, which was proven with the third ave sign. not complaining though since this was a good video.

I was always informed that one of floors inside the spire housed a gentlemans club such as the club's that exist in London and many other cities. Can anyone advise if this is/was true. Ta

I visited recently. For whatever reason the original lobby is closed off.

It's kind of ridiculous that only the rich and famous can access the secret 103rd floor. Guess them tickets cost a lot of cash to go up there. It's about money I'm assuming

Why there's nothing much than the entrance to Olympus

So, celebrities get to visit the spire, but not the general public. Seems like a form of class discrimination.

Celebrities not the public, sounds very socialistic
