In this Disney animated film, Wendy (Kathryn Beaumont) and her two brothers are amazed when a magical boy named Peter Pan (Bobby Driscoll) flies into their bedroom, supposedly in pursuit of his rebellious shadow. He and his fairy friend, Tinkerbell, come from a far-off place called Neverland, where children stay perpetually young. Enchanted, the kids follow him back. But when Pan's nemesis, the pirate Captain Hook (Hans Conried), causes trouble, the kids begin to miss their old life.

About Tinkerbell's personality ranking from kind to psychopathic, the 2003 live action movie explained it better: fairies and pixies are born when a baby first laughs and, just like a baby, their minds only have space for one emotions at a time.

Since you talked about Peter Pan being a bit creepy and evil-looking at times, in the original book he can be disturbing because he doesn't understand the concept of death, is super self-centered and doesn't show much concern for others, and enjoys violence as a game. It's even implied that he kills The Lost Boys who grow too old. He was raised by fairies, who are known to be mischievous and have a poor understanding of human morals. In the Disney version, this is toned down but due to being an eternal kid he is immature and can often be a jerk.

And speaking of fairies, in the original book it's also explained that fairies can only feel one emotion at the time and they feel extremely strongly, so they basically have no control over their emotions. That's why Tinker Bell is like that. She's very interesting Disney character to me, as she is a good guy who can also do bad stuff.

Mr.Smee never struck me as evil. To me, he always seemed more like a kind, misunderstood elder man

In the book, Peter as a child was taken to Never Land by fairies. At some point he came back but found his mother with new baby, thinking she had replaced him. The reason the Lost Boys are all boys is apparently because girls were too smart to be lured into Never Land.

I love this movie, especially the scenes with the villains. Captain Hook and Mr. Smee are are such a hilarious duo, Hook himself is one of the Disney villain greats, and the "Never Smile At A Crocodile" sequence is one of my favorites in animation.

32:49, in the original play (and later book but it works better in the play), Captain Hook poisoned a drink meant for Peter and Tinker Bell drank it to save Peter and Peter realized that Tinker Bell could only survive if children believed in fairies again so he tells the play’s audience to “clap your hands if you believe in fairies” and we the audience clap our hands so that Tinker Bell can come back to life.

I love the 2003 Peter Pan...live action, and Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) is a GREAT Hook.

The 2003 version is even more amazing if you're open to watching it.The lead actors for Peter and Wendy were perfectly cast because their friendship translated on film and added onto the charm of the script, which itself was directly inspired from the novel.

Some people didn't think it worked because Peter isn't supposed to be capable of romantic attraction, given that he's a child before anything else; but the main conflict of having to choose between the extremes of childhood and adulthood is still intact. The director really knew what he was doing in bringing out the best of the source material while also working with what he had at the time.

I'm not Indigenous although as a Hispanic I've always been "adjacent" to it and so while I could understand why the "Red man" element was offensive and cringe, what I always felt made up for it was that Tiger Lily was an absolute boss who after Hook kidnaps herand threatens to have her killed in such a way that would deny her an afterlife (by drowning), she shows virtually no fear and does so without knowing Pan was hiding and about to rescue her. She's also basically the only female on the island who doesn't harbor some kind of vendetta against Wendy (we see her kiss Peter but she's not shown as being aware of Wendy's seeing it and its done more out of gratitude than spite). I draw a straight line from TL to Jasmine, Moana, and most definitely Pocahontas (she was literally featured in the concept Gong Show art for the movie and Jeffrey Katzenberg greenlit it on the spot).

I grew up with both old and new Disney movies. It’s so cool to see people who haven’t seen the old classics experience them for the first time

According to the original story, the reason there are no lost girls is because, unlike the boys, they are too clever to fall out of their prams. Keep this in mind when the remake comes out.

7:47, He had parents when he was born but then flew away and by the time he came back his mother had given up on him ever returning so she sealed the window shut and he wasn’t able to get back in and the result was that he swore never to grow up. (That’s from the book Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.)

The actress who does the voice of Wendy does the voice of Alice as well the actor that does the voice of Mr. Smee does the voice of the white rabbit in Alice in wonderland

I miss these older Disneys. No modern Disney will ever feel the way these do. For better or worse

24:24 Fun fact: In 2003, Marc Davis an animator of Peter Pan said in a interview "I don't think we would do the Native Americans if we were making this movie now and if we did, we definitely wouldn't do it the way we did back then."

I could be wrong, but I think the mermaids trying to drown Wendy is a reference to what they're based off of: sirens.

Sirens lure men at sea to their death, usually with a mesmerizing song or by disguising themselves as a beautiful woman.

I think in the book, Neverland was simply an island across the Atlantic Ocean. I think the area is also hinted to be the location of the fabled Fountain of Youth, hence why everyone doesn’t age. Many interpretations make it seem like Neverland is a whole other world.

There’s another live action film made in 2003, starring Jeremy Sumpter. Plus a few Tinkerbell animated spinoffs.
