How I Buy Cheap Cars

If you’ve watched either of my channels you know that quite often I pick up a used vehicle for $500 or less. In this #ETCG1Video I talk about how I manage to do that. It might not be what you think.

How do you purchase ‘cheap’ vehicles?

Thanks for watching!

So basically be friendly and casually convince your friends to buy expensive newer cars for their daughters while simultaneously convincing to get rid of their prize "junk" cars. Well played etcg well played.

I've mostly paid around 400 bucks for cars. They have always needed major work (and an accumulation of minor work that makes it time consuming) but I love it. I now have experience with some advanced repairs and enough tools in my studio apartment to be constantly stressing about locking my front door. Although I will say that most of my cars were lemons. They were not worth the repairs I made and I hemorrhaged money.

I had an all wheel drive corolla, I put an add up stating I wanted an owners manual and factory Corolla alloy wheels, a guy calls me up and says "I've got the exact car with an owners manual and factory corolla alloys I bought for it, I'll sell you the whole car for $500 because the clutch is gone"
Drove that $300 car for more than 2 years until the clutch finally let go. I'm near 50 years old now, that was the best automobile I've ever had, irrespective of the cost.

A guy I worked with told me about his 1993 Corolla that he had for sale. It was $600. That was in 2005 and I still have it and daily it every day.

I bought my daughter's first car, 01 Honda Accord with a v6, it was towed to the shop after sitting for 3 yrs.sold the customer a iac, battery and lof. They mentioned they were selling it. Paid 1k plus the shop bill of 500. 1500 for a v6 honda with 100k on it. Sadly she totaled it after i spent a couple grand with the 100k services, brakes etc, plus a full detail

Was looking for a cheapo commuter, and my friends brother had his 90 celica 5 speed, with 225K on the clock, sitting in his driveway with a charging problem. They just wanted it cleared off the property, so I threw an alternator in it, and it didn't need anything else, and still got 400 miles to a tank. Considering I had to keep up with Jersey traffic on route 80 to and from work everyday, I thought I was darn lucky. Timing is everything.

Earlier this year I was out a vehicle and so I searched craigslist specifically for 2003 to 2005 Honda accord. I was lucky enough to find one that was under $1000, and after some coaxing I convinced the owner that $500 was a good price to sell it for. Granted the engine was shot so I had to find a replacement motor, and there were other issues with the vehicle that I expected I would have to fix later on down the road. About a week later, I was lucky enough to find a motor for $450. Two days after I purchased the motor, I was able to drive the car, and to this day I drive it everywhere. It still has some quirks, , but other than that it is a very reliable, good car, and I absolutely love it!

It's worth putting money in the older cars to keep them safe & reliable. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.

About a decade ago my wife was offered a 1999 Toyota Tercel for $500, from a friend.
Fully certified, road worthy and Toyota serviced all its life.
Best little car we owned.
Past it on to my daughter after 5 yrs of use, her commute was 120kms, .
After two years she invested in a new vehicle and the Tercel was given to my sister-in-law. She beat it with a ton of rural driving until the floor gave out just last year.

When I buy a used car, which is not all that often now, I have all the fluids changed by the car's brand; ford to ford. This gives me the opportunity to review what they think the car needs. That gives me a priority list, starting with wear items like brakes, plugs, filters.
