I have found that yes sometimes mowers (actually most things) are sometimes sold under multiple brand names (usually store brands) but most of the manufactures will source common parts from other manufactures ie engines, transmissions, wheels etc. They do all like to add their own twist so that you cannot interchange.

Steve, some info on MTD: a while back Stanley Black & Decker bought a 20% interest in MTD, who make Cub Cadet, Troy Bilt, etc. That deal had an option for SBD to buy the remaining 80% of MTD, which SBD completed in December 2021. People online sometimes bad mouth MTD. Troy-Bilt/MTD sponsored my channel for 6 years and the people I have met at their facilities are hard working people who care about what they do. 😀 - Eric.

I can vouch that MTD are not affiliated. John Deere mowers and riding mowers are made about 30 miles from me in Greeneville, Tennessee. Now I don't know if they have any other assembly plants in the U.S. but I do know about the one in Greeneville.

I put 14 seasons on a 135 and was well pleased I just wanted a wider deck, much better frame and chassis than the mower I currently have.

I own and maintain a 2008 JD LA125 mower. Rock solid and bulletproof. I have been a watcher of Steve’s videos for a good long while. His video content and laid back teaching and troubleshooting methods are college level quality. April you are a nice addition to the presentations.

Interesting comments on MTD. I have used their mowers for years with minimal issues. I collect mowers at the curb, many MTD. Most are carb issues, a few ran without oil and a few broken parts from neglect. Parts availability is good so I fix and sell them. Overall I have not experienced poor craftsmanship on those units.

Back when I was driving trucks, I made several trips to a company in South Carolina that made riding mowers. I can't remember the name of the company now, but I know they manufactured Craftsman riding mowers. Maybe some others also.

I have a 93 lx172 and a 2004 lt180 vtwin Kawasaki both still running and cutting good. I bought both at a John Deere dealership and not cheap. I have worked on small engine equipment for 25yrs as a side job at my home shop. They are not the same. Not even close.

I haven’t tuned in for Steve’s Small Engine Saloon in a while. Where did April come from? Did she make you quit drinking? What’s up? I turn my back for a moment and everything goes to heck!

Hey April and Steve! I always thought that the Deere mowers were independently made, however, I saw somebody say that they were made by AYP (I no longer trust them). I guess they didn't know what they were talking about. Thank you for clarifying! And Man, I am really not enjoying MTD's customer Great video! Looking forward to tomorrow's!

Awesome sauce! I always knew this but you know how some get. Thank you both for the research and clarification. What gets me is anybody else could have done the same, I know I do my own research.

I give JD credit! I have had my riding lawn mower for twelve years! And it is still going strong! Basic maintenance, but nothing fancy! And yes I have abused this machine! And it keeps on ticking! Getting ready for season thirteen!
