I’ve worked in the ER as a nurse for about 30 yrs now. Things I’ve seen in ears… moths, cockroaches, worms, flys, beads, spiders etc! Never a dull moment.

Once I had to bring a walk-in patient back to an exam room. He said something was in his left ear. He could feeling something biting and walking around on the eardrum. He was in excruciating pain. Yep, there it was, a very large Japanese water beetle! Got orders from the attending to do an ear lavage. Finally managed to flush him out. That little thing just kept holding onto that tender eardrum and even with numbing drops the poor patient was dying in pain. He was so relieved!

Jesus that's worse than the moth that flew into my ear. 2 hours of syringing to get it out and it was still alive. I remember what hearing it's wings flap sounded like in my head, the idea of hearing a crab moving???? Oh my god throw up

If anyone is ever unfortunate enough to be in this situation: tilt your head so that the bug--filled ear is facing up (goes against instinct, I know...), then pour an oil, like olive oil, until it overflows. The bug will drown, making it easier for a doctor to pull it out and reducing the damage the creature might cause to your eardrum
