A cave diver’s fatal mistake | The Goss Canyon Tragedy

preview_player
Показать описание
Two brothers went for a day of cave diving fun, but only one of them returned. Paul and Michael Hayden explored a Goss Canyon cave dozens of times, but it took a single mistake to end it all in complete tragedy for an Air Force pararescue diver.

I just created this option if you want to support the page. These videos are all researched, written, edited and animated by me. This really helps to support the work I do. Thank you so much!

One of the reasons why you’re one of my favorites when covering disasters is that you actually show real footage if there is any. Also the amount of simulations and references you use to describe what’s going on really helps me understand the situation. I definitely think you deserve more views but I have no doubt you’ll get there soon. 😊

It really doesn’t ever get talked about enough about how deadly unbalanced mixtures of air can be, especially CO2 concentrations. I was afflicted by carbon dioxide poisoning while doing maintenance electrical work underneath a turkey meat blender that used dry ice while mixing. Let me tell you CO2 poisoning sets in so fast because once it becomes above 2% concentration you becomes impaired, essentially making you stupid. Tachycardia, numbness, weakness, all while becoming increasingly more impaired. Lucky to have made it out alive to be honest.

As a Former Pararescueman I was stationed with Paul Hayden at the 301st ARRS in Homestead AFB Fla. back in the 80s. Paul was a great guy. He was so funny and always had a smile on his face. I can still see him cooking his steak with his old Black Lab Duke and drinking a beer by the backyard pool. RIP Paul you are missed!! Fish

How about we as an intelligent species just stop cramming ourselves into small crevices in the earths crust I think that’d be a generally good idea

I knew you could possibly die from breathing in air pockets. But i never knew that a single breath of CO² (or other gases) could make you lose consciousness.

Wow, Ive seen a number of cave dive videos talk about bad air but I never realized it can happen so fast. The clip from Paul and this video explaination really drive that home.

These stories of people getting trapped make me appreciate the air I breathe. (Also rest in peace to the man)

Your channel is by far the best “disaster “ channel out there. I cannot believe you haven’t blown up yet. The amount of respect you show in your videos for the victims and their situation is refreshing. You stick to the facts, do your research, show footage if there is any and make simulations to help us understand what happened and why. Keep up the amazing work!

That's actually insane, 1 breath and he was gone.

My husband was a soldier and he talks about pararescue airmen with reverence. It’s a tier one special forces unit whose mission is to rescue other tier one servicemen when shit hits the fan. Their motto is, “that others may live”. Paul did it for 20 years. May he rest in peace.

A single bad decision is all it takes for it to become a deadly outcome.

I've said it before and I will say it again: being trained and certified in open circuit diving does NOT make you qualified to dive in a cave. It is an overhead environment. You cannot immediately go up to the surface if you run into problems. If you swim like you do in the open, you will kick up silt and you will silt out the environment, causing you to lose your way. Going into an air pocket does not guarantee that the air is going to be safe to breathe as tragically happened with Paul. If you want to cave dive, go through the proper training and certification process so that you can cave dive as safely as possible.

8 mins is the perfect amount of time to tell one of these tales. Some of these guys pontificate for 40 minutes its like watching paint dry

Maybe not the same branch, but applicable anyways: as a former industry worker, as remember a saying which goes like _"Fatal accidents don't give a sh*t about your training and certifications... One chance is everything they need"_

Great work! Crazy to think one breath of bad air killed this trained diver.
