Mazda CX-5 AWD diagonal test: Mazda updated their AWD system again! Guess they are fans of our famous test! Again this year we show a completely different reaction in our test hill! Thanks to the i-AWD system combined to the MI-drive feature now available in the CX-5! A new Off-road mode makes its appearance on the Kuro, GT, Sport Design, and Signature models! Make sure you switch OFF-road mode before getting in the deep stuff. Don't turn TCS OFF cause there is no more button for that.

Enjoying the outdoors often requires navigating unsurfaced roads such as gravel, steep inclines and declines. Mazda intelligent Drive Select or Mi Drive takes full advantage of SkyActive Vehicle Dynamics technology offering three modes with the flick of a switch. Normal Mode is ideal for day-to-day driving on paved roads with balanced fuel economy and offers the best driving performance. Sport Mode offers a greater acceleration response. Prioritize for winding roads and overtaking on highways. The third option is an Off-Road mode, which prioritizes traction of the All-Wheel Drive system. This mode optimizes controls of various systems for a wide range of off-road driving conditions from gravel to snow. Even city dwellers who are not used to driving off-road will feel confident and be able to enjoy driving on different road surfaces. When activated, the off-road mode will optimize the following systems control characteristics:

- All Wheel Drive for high traction performance
- Smooth traction control
- Automatic Transmission Control for smooth and continuous torque
- G Vectoring Control for grip while cornering
- The engine idling speed that maximizes climbing capability

I’m impressed. Looks like their development department has taken up the challenge and doesn’t want to fail at this world renowned diagonal test. This reaction time might be even better than X Mode

I think it is awesome that the Mazda engineers saw a problem and absolutely crush the solution!! They took it personal, ZOOM-ZOOM!

Is it the same as the model previous to this facelift that it also has the new off road mode, but with a switch on the dashboard?

Is it just me…or does it look like he’s using momentum!? I thought back in day they used to pause half way -then give it throttle. Seems like the cx5 would have made either way, but you never know!

Yes, it's cool, but the test is not valid, and here's why: you tested on dry asphalt, and the wheels that were not hanging in the air but stayed on the ground had almost 100% traction on the asphalt. In reality, on the off-road (especially in wet weather), the wheels will not have much traction with the surface and will slip.
I also have a 2022 CX-5 4WD.
