SELF WATERING (WICK) DIY 16 INCH PLANTER
LIST OF MATERIALS:
1. 16 inch round planter –Better Homes and Garden
2. Lid-5 gallon bucket
3. 4 inch PVC Sewer pipe-cut to 4-3/4 inch long-Wick
or a 1.56 pint plastic pot that is 4-7/8 inch tall and 4 inch diameter.
4. 1-1/2 inch PVC pipe-cut to 13 inch long
5. Bamboo Skewer-filler gauge
6. Foam Board-cut to 1”x8”-float
7. Tie Wrap-4 pieces
Notes:
1. Drill two ¼ inch diameter holes on the side 4 inches from the bottom of planter. one opposite of the other.
2. Trim the Filler Gauge (skewer) about a ½ inch above the filler tube
So when the tank is empty only a ½ inch of the skewer is showing.
3. Fill the 4 inch PVC with Peat Moss-Wick
4. Fill the planter with potting soil then plant.
5. Mix in some Osmocote fertilizer with the soil.
6. Water the plant thoroughly then fill the tank with water
through the Fill Tube until water comes out of the ¼ inch hole
on the side of the planter.

Thank you so much for this awesome video. I made two of these in May. It is now late august and my flowers are still blooming. I water about once a week. I am located in the hot and humid south. We were even able to go on vacation for nearly two weeks in July and my plants survived.

It took about 2 quarts of peat moss to fill the wick (4 inch PVC pipe) and 1/2 cubic foot of potting soil
to fill the planter.

I change the size of the wicking pipe from 4" to 3" and now to 1-1/2" PVC pipes. I will know soon enough
when hot days are upon us here where I live.

The Holes on the floor (5 gallon bucket lid) did not do much to make the potting soil a little dryer. I found
plants that likes moist soil and it is working well.

I needed to add 1/4 inch drain holes all over the floor (5 gallon bucket lid). The potting soil is too wet and the
plants I planted like a well drain soil.
