It sounds like you're asking people to do the impossible. How are you supposed to absorb everything the first time you read it?
People take notes to condense the information down to manageable bits. They then apply that information to sample problems to get used to using it. Finally they test themselves to verify that the information has stuck. Only then do they feel comfortable moving on to the next block of information. This is the most intuitive way for people to learn.
