These ice sheets began to form about 2.6 million years ago and reached their maximum extent about 20,000 years ago.

At the height of the last ice age, large portions of North America, Europe, and Asia were covered by ice sheets, with the Laurentide Ice Sheet covering much of what is now Canada and the northern United States, and the Eurasian Ice Sheet covering much of northern Europe and Asia.

As the Earth's climate began to warm about 15,000 years ago, the ice sheets began to retreat, and much of the ice that covered the Earth's surface began to melt. This melting caused sea levels to rise, and many of the low-lying areas that had been covered by ice became flooded with water.

Today, there are still some areas of the Earth that are covered in ice, such as the polar ice caps, but they are much smaller than they were during the last ice age.
