The sandbender scene was the first time Toph witnessed the power of the avatar state. Just imagine how she felt when twinkletoes' voice suddenly echoed the voices of a thousand avatars. She couldn't see it, but her enhanced senses of hearing and touch definitely painted a terrifying picture of what would happen if you got on his bad side.
